more RAM... why?

hey Linus.. A long time subscriber here. I keep seeing you mention 8Gb of RAM is so low. I'm wondering how low do you think 8gb is for the bulk of users. like how many percentage of users are actual hardcore video rendered (to the extent u guys do at your group) or such?

For example.. I work with mechanical modeling software (ABAQUS). So far my office pc had only 8Gb of ram. In a model with almost 10000 elements I barely maxed out on my ram while having gizilions of tabs open in chrome. If what you are saying is for more pro users then I don't think they care for your recommendation. What I am wondering is why would you add to consumerism hype and make people over spend on the parts they do not need?

8gb is the base line, 16gb is luxury, 32gb is for specific workloads already.

He's not. You're just making use of the SWAP functionality in Windows. It's unlikely you'll ever max out your RAM in Windows as long as you leave paging enabled. 8GB is fine for standard web browsing/office use/word processing/gaming without multitasking. For the average kind of person that watches most of the content LMG produces, 8GB isn't much.

I also have a gaming pc at home with the same amount of ram, an RX480 and a 1080p 60hz monitor (typical setup). I only needed more than 8gb ram in recent shadow of war game and now am slowly thinking to upgrade my ram only for that reason

Ummm. 16GB isn't luxury. 8GB is "I'm really poor and don't have money for 16GB". 16GB is Standard. 32GB is luxury.,

imho

A large majority of people are fine with 8GB.

That's all you really need to run a game and a few programs in the background.

You come from wealthy countries life experience, totally not the reality for more than half the world. (Not being picky or any thing, just saying... I have lived in many south and central American countries).

Use any of the Adobe CC and you will use 64gbs easy. Especially AE and Premiere multi tasking

There hardly is what to talk about, 8gb is the minimum to play latest AAA, 16gb is desirable to avoid performance lost in said games, 32gb is still more than you need at all for gaming. The End

 Not necessarily. I'm just calling it as it is. People don't choose to have 8GB RAM in a device unless they were unable to (or unwilling to) spend the extra on 16GB.

 

In this day and age, you really have to CHOOSE to downgrade to 8GB RAM for a desktop system.

Absolutely, and I'm not saying otherwise, but if you don't have 64GB, you're gonna be making use of that pagefile. No two ways around it.

The only way to not use the pagefile while working with Adobe products is having tons of RAM. Nothing you can do about it. That's the only solution that checks the "no swapping/pagefile used" box.

right.. btw, how much does it matter for these video/pic editing software to have a fast access to memory? i.e. does pagefile on an SSD give you any disadvantage?

Those of us on this forum are a minority. There are large numbers of people with 8GB of ram or less and no ssd's and older lesser cpu's. Those who are not enthusiasts aren't always up to date on the latest stuff.

I don't fancy killing my SSD.

 

Not having enough RAM to run everything leads to the page file being used and in the case of SSDs this can kill them faster.
