Let’s Talk About How Much Of A Rip-Off Micro Center Is

With this guy?

Well let's put it this way:

  • The nearest Microcenter is an hour drive away. It also looks like it's built out of an abandoned Mervin's.
  • I live within 20 minutes of two Fry's
  • There's a Best Buy 10 minutes away
  • One of NewEgg's main distribution hubs is in LA, which I live two hours away from. So shipping's cheap or if I want to do a day trip to LA I can just do will-call and pick it up at their warehouse
  • Amazon has a main distribution hub in Los Vegas, which is about 6 hours away. Which means I can get same day if not next day delivery.

So yes, I'm a lucky bastard to be in a location where pretty much every major electronics outfit is within spitting distance either if I go there myself or get it shipped. This is also why I don't find Microcenter to be anything special.

Major stores, I have Best Buy.

But the local shops know me and give me awesome deals, so there is that.

Sadly I'm from another continent so never bought from them, but I know people that had crazy deals with them. Like 4790K less than my 4460 kind of deals. That's crazy. I wish they ripped me off like that.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

The only thing that pisses me off about MicroCenter are the sales guys that think they know more than you and/or are just trying to up sell you since they’re on commission. You’d think if you walk in and say that I just need this thing they’d get it for you but they always stop and say something like, “okay, well, let’s see. That part is this. What are you going to use it for? Why’d you pick this? Would you want to look at this?” No, just get my freaking item. You’d think they’d take the quick and easy commission and move on to the next customer.

Ask them which part has the best "NURBS" rating, and watch them scramble

I do this when I get some overeager salesman in a tech store trying to upsell me.

Works every time.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

You probably have to catch them when they have a sale or a bundle. Otherwise I can’t explain why they’re selling the i5-8400 $60 more than MSRP

Because they are try to get rid off open box or old motherboard

If they selling cheap, it may end up more open box motherboard

last time I checked, they have like about 72 open box motherboard (AMD+Intel) at my location

they dont even have good bundles, frys electronics in my experience has better bundle deals on a weekly basis, got my ryzen 5 1400 and asus prime b350 plus on combo there for $220

EDIT they also paid the sales tax on my 16gb ram kit and i live in california so that was like 8% savings instantly
