Is 1080ti worth it?

Im building a new pc and wondering if i should get a 1070, 1080 or a 1080ti

Im mostly going to game 1080p in ultra settings and a 144hz monitor. Also wondering what would last me longer in the long run.

 

This will be my first pc build so i want it to be nice.  But if i could game on 1080p in ultra setting and in 144hz with a 1070 or a 1080 i would just stick with that.

For 144Hz 1080p at high-ultra you'll want a 1080Ti to maximize frames

are you getting a G-Sync panel?

A 1070 is perfect for 1080p 144hz, a 1080TI for 1080p is way too overkill and not really worth it in my eyes. If you had a 1440p 144hz or 4k panel then a 1080TI would be a good choice.

1080. It's much better value than the other two and has enough speed to last at least 3 years. Not surprised if it's still ok 5 years later.

No it isn't if you want to make  good use of the 144hz you need the GTX 1080, especially in Eye candy games.

My 1070 runs games at a pretty high framerate, perfect for my 1080p 144hz display. Not sure what you're on about my dude. OW gets upwards of 170 fps, PUBG and Mirage get 100-140ish fps. Of course if you're talking about games like ROTTR and Witcher 3, then yeah it's not perfect but the framerate is high enough for a more than pleasant experience around 80-110fps.

170fps on OW isn't that hard to achieve, for big AAA graphically intense games you'll need at LEAST a 1080 if not a Ti within 1-2 years

1080ti is overkill for 1080p. its a 1440p card.

1080ti is overkill for 1080p even high frame rate gaming... Just don't buy it for that resolution honestly... you're better off with a 1070 or a 1080 [depending on pricing at ur region & mining etc] for that resolution which means more money for your gaming 1080p monitor.

 

It should be noted it's best bought for either a 4k 60fps monitor OR 1440p 144/165hz monitor in relation to gaming...  two choices pretty much.

 

I'm rocking a 1080Ti with the latter and I feel those two match well and will match best for a very long time, 1440p is still relevantly detailed to my eyes, i can't notice much over 4k esp on a 27" wide screen monitor where 4k doesn't make sense imo... plus its nice to have those extra frames, it makes the gameplay overall smoother. coupled it with g-sync (which can be a cost to some) and you don't have to worry about the frames at all. everything is just so smooth.

 

then again, it depends on what games you play. esports or AAA titles... which is something to consider also

If you're only doing 1080p, a 1080ti is a waste. You won't get full GPU utilization at that resolution so you'll just be throwing money away. Arguably, a 1080 could also be overkill.

Even with a great cpu some game won't be at 100+ fps.

Very demanding or less optimised game don't run well.

I am not even sure a 1080Ti can handle those.

A 1080 ti will be pushing more frames than a 1080, even in 1080p. BUT: The +Performanc e won't be 30-40%; but more like only 15% more, because a 1080 ti has so much performance in a low 1080p Resolution, that you will run into a CPU Bottleneck even in Ultra settings (see Digitalfoundry's videos).

Of course, a Bottleneck won't be a hard cap and reduce performance instantly to -50%.

But the difference between 1080 ti and 1080 won't be the usual 30-40% (like in 4k) but only 25%. or 20%. or 15%. or 10%. Depends how strong the bottleneck will be.

 

I personally would go for a regular 1080, because price / performance. And just don't be stupid and set everything to Ultra. Games are NOT optimized for Ultra. It looks 0.5% better, but takes away 40% fps. Is that worth for you?

Just go down to High, Enjoy a perfectly fine high end Grpahic, and high fps

 

If you REALLY "need" Ultra settings to sleep well at night, this is the only Advice i can give you: You can NOT have enough GPU power. Period.

You WILL be able to bring every GPU down to it's knees. Doesn't matter if it's 1080p or 4k.

It will be able to handle those without a doubt given his current choices, just depends on which one is the bottleneck. [eyeing on the cpu wink wink Usually*]. at 1080p high frame rate gaming especially given the OP, it becomes more of how good the cpu is rather than the graphics... graphics cards are so good that it just cranks a ridiculous amount of fps on 1080p for no reason unless it's either a cpu intensive game [Battlefield 1] or recent AAA title or not optimized well [pubg].

 

A good example that I can say for myself is that sometimes (sometimes) I play League of Legends sometimes when my friends are wanting to play or I need a break off AAA games and i see 275-350fps often those high frame rates at 1440p resolution which is retarded/insane. But that means jack crap since my monitor's theoretical limit is 165Hz essentially... so this probably says something... that my graphics is being fully utilized since its computing an unusual amount of frames even though I'm limited by my monitor's frame rate.

 

So yea, for 1080p gaming imo you're best served off with a 1070 or 1080 again, depending on your budget and the relative price to performance [take note maybe some 1070 might still be higher in price due to mining maybe]. You'll save some money, save on power consumption [a 1080Ti consumes more power than a 1070 or 1080], get your desired frame rates and still have a bit of money to upgrade your system.

 

also*** the reason why some games are not able to achieve >100fps even on 1080p is probably either a combination of high intensive graphic/textures/shadow/rendering required or not properly optimized to take advantage of the hardware provided*... just some case scenarios to think of... hehe

On game like Ghost recon Wildland or Black Desert online i don't think so.

It will just depend of the game, for some a 1080Ti won't do the job.

Simply because they are poorly optimised.

 

Imo unless you have a very high budget, 1080Ti for 1080p is a bad choice.

A 1080 can handle any well optimised game with ease.

And poorly optimised ones won't run that well even with a Ti.

for 1080p 144hz I think that a 1080 is good enough in majority of games. if you wanna play something like gta or ghost recon wild lands I would get A beefy cpu because that is were it draws its power. in those games but with like a 1080 if should get good fps.

Ryzen is very great. However, in VERY high fps scenarios, Intel's i7 7700k has, due to it's high clock speed (and thus, higher performance per Core) still the edge in average fps.

With G-Sync it doesn't matter much. However, the additional Performance of a 1080 ti in just 1080p, combined with the not first-class super high fps  capabilities, i doubt you will get more additional performance than +10-15% out of it, compared to a GTX 1080 that costs 200 bucks less.

 

Get the 1080, maybe lower settings to 2nd highest, and be happy with a good price / performance ratio. ^^
