Synergy, buy it for "life"

xxxHellcatsxxx

Hm....

TBH it should be a free upgrade, or maybe $5

IMO, it would be fine if they kept on developing and supporting Synergy 1

Um, I'm pretty sure that when I bought Synergy, it said "Lifetime access to Synergy"... so...

you need a sustainable business model. that means create a system where the consumer pays over time for one product, or buys new products after a period of time

they may not have had the idea of another in mind at the time. they are selling a new product. if you dont want to buy it than you can simply continue using the one you already own

That would be acceptable if that's what was presented, but it wasn't. Synergy was a free product that you could donate to. Now they are completely changing what the original Synergy promised. That's why I am bothered by this.

it would have been great but as far as a sustainable business model goes this can only last so long. Some markets do have a ceiling

I bought synergy less than a month ago, with no mention of a possible new product/version, so yes, I'm a little ticked off that I have to pay almost what I paid for the original product again, 1 month later.

Ugh... I just bought it yesterday. I hope they don't make me pay for Synergy 2. Esp since they didn't mention the caveat of not working with Wayland in Linux. I typically research things like that, but it never occurred to me since it's been touting Linux support back when it was a free project.

I like TeamViewer's model better... there's an option for people to use the service for free for certain things, and then professionals pay a license fee... they've obviously been pretty successful. I'm probably going to end up buying it though, because it is crucial for my setup and having an unsupported piece of software isn't necessarily something I'm after

i appreciate that as am i. i just think that realistically what choice do they have. the software popularity exceeded the original expectations. they are offering services that require servers to be up as well as staff to develop and troubleshoot the programs. this costs money and as a result they need to create a sustainable business model. that means create a system where the consumer pays over time for one product, or buys new products after a period of time. as @RadiatingLight said having an upgrade system for current synergy users would have been the best solution IMO

Not so. TV you can use for free for personal use and commercial use is paid for. This is making you rebuy for personal use and they already have an enterprise version that you pay for annually.

I didn't even know they had an enterprise version... I first tried Synergy when it was free and I really liked it, and also donated for it. Then it was no longer required in my setup, so I got rid of it. Fast forward to a month ago when I was doing graphic/web design on a Mac and almost everything else on a PC on the same desk, I bought it again, reasonably understanding that I would be getting new versions of the software... hence "Lifetime access to Synergy"

Judging from the "whats new" section, I am intrigued about the no more IP/Domain name. This is big for me as I need to use my Public IP of my home network to connect with my VPN connected laptop, even though the computers are only 2 feet apart as it doesnt allow me to use my LAN IP when connected through the VPN. This could really help me... I may upgrade to the 2nd version honestly...
