What's the most ghetto way you've gotten a PC to function the way you've wanted it?

Used zip ties as bolts and nuts to fasten an AIO to my gtx 770 for super coooooool watercooling. it was a very efficient setup with mini heat sinks for the vram and a fan lightly blowing across it all. Worked perfectly for a year until I sold the card (with original cooler back on)

i rewired a case fan to go into a psu of which the fan was making noises - zapped my stupid ass and blew a fuse but its fine now and the psu is still running fine

 

currently i have my "rig" set up on a cardboard box and 3 hdd just dangling to the side on the psu wiring harness

I didn't have enough money to buy fittings so i used hot glue and duct tape. I also didn't have screws for the fan.

You could have tack glued the fan's corners, would have been prettier and more effective.

The point was to make it sloppy. Also anyone can buy 980tis for $200 when they are in stock. Lol

I was playing Halo Online and mentioned the 980Tis for $200 and literally all 15 of the people I was playing with called bullshit, so I'm not the only one who thinks you're a huge BSer.

When I first built my pc it wouldn't boot. I noticed a jumper on the mobo. I tried to find what positions mean what in the manual but didn't find anything, so I randomly switch positions on every set of pins on my mobo until it worked.

A lot of Dells have jumpers like that to hard reset the BIOS.

Was at a LAN party once. Three friends and myself had a the great idea of making our own 5760x1080 setup with three of our 1080p monitors. Not a bad idea since they were all the same-ish size (around 24 inch). The only struggle now was to find something powerful enough to make it run games at any decent rate. We had the genius idea of using my then PC (3570K, Z77X-UP7, GTX 660 SLi) to be the host since it was the only PC that supported SLi. However, there's no way on earth those 660s could do anything meaningful  at triple 1080 so frankenPC was born.

 

Think it's time i mentioned what everyone was running so: 

1. one friend had a 4670 + GTX 670.
2. another friend had a 4770K + GTX 770 (mentioned above). 
3. final friend had a 4670K + GTX 770.

Anyway, we got both of the GTX 770s (2GB) and threw them into my PC. We then hit a snag because I had a really shitty PSU which only had two 6+2 connectors. Not enough for the two 770s. We then borrowed on the GPU cables from a friends PC to power one of the 770s using his PSU. 

 

So, we had my board with two 770s, that was effectively being powered by two power supplies (while still powering his main rig for some reason), running three monitors. 

 

It was shitty, but it worked and that's all that matters.

I once had a Dell dimension

 

The things I did to that computer.

 

I took the propritary Dell motherboard and power supply and put it into a gateway case that I thought looked cool that I found on the side of the road. The case did not line up to the rear IO hole, or the rear fan hole, or the pci slots, or the motherboard holes. I used a dremel amd literally like 40 cutting wheels to cut out a new IO hole,  rear fan mount and just like a gaping hole for pcie slots.

Aditionally I drilled holes for the motherboard and psu. I didnt have stand offs so I made chunks of wood with holes in them for washers to mount my motherboard. After I got the psu and Mobo mounted, I wanted to cover the gamping hole where the rear fan was. My solution was to take the perforated metal piece that used to be there before and still 3 wood screws though it and some surrounding metal and into the fan just a little bit.  After all this, I wanted a window. So I cut one and used some random plastic that found to make a window. Then I wanted some LESs. So I solderes together some Christmas lights. To power them I cut one of the Molex power connectors off and solder directly to the other wires. I did the same to the fans, hdd indicator, power indicator, and even the gpu fans to give it that " lively look"

 

No stick of ram matched

There were cut wires on the psu

The case clearly didnt fit the motherboard

I used wood for spacers

There was less just tapped into random wires

The power and reset board from the Dell had wires soldered to it for the gateway case buttons

Leds were soldered to literally any power spuce I could think of.

 

This Dell survived for 2 years befpre one day just not turning on anymore. It was already 5 years old before all this. This was my very first computer

Let me clear this up. There aren't always 980tis for $199 new. EVGA has a thing called B-stock which means 1 year warranty and the product has minor scuffs dents or other defects that QC has rejected that aren't big enough to scrap the whole thing. So when EVGA needs to clear out space for new generations they will typically sell it as B-stock as they aren't shipping to retailers anymore. Since they need it gone the prices are very low. As in $199 for a new 980ti. People bought them all instantly and flipped them on ebay for $350+. But you can easily find 980tis for $240 range. Linus got one on scrap yard wars for $220 and Kyle got one for $209. They were used and I wouldn't call people on Halo Online the most trustworthy.

My old rig wouldn't post unless the only SATA device plugged in was the hard drive. Then, once it posted I would plug everything in before Windows started loading.

I could only get sound if I used optical audio, but only if it was plugged in while it was playing a sound. I had to plan how to plug usb devices in, too. They had to be plugged in to certain ports, but the ports I could use changed depending on how many usb things were plugged in. That thing was possessed by a real jerk of a poltergeist.

It turned out to be a bad psu. The power delivery was really bad. My brother runs it now with a few new components. Sound still doesn't work but everything else is rosy-dory.

That was my inspiration for the GPU mod in the first place...that, and the fact that the GT 620 sucks.

Back maybe 10 - 15 years ago amd Sempron  £20 new CPU probably about £50 worth of lights. This required so many molex connectors and my PSU was so cheap I bought a 2nd one duck taped it to the top of the case, and shorted out two wires in the 20 pin motherboard connector at the same time as turning the PC on. (Green and brown wires I think).

My rig circa ~08

I kicked the front of it fumbling about in the dark, hurt like a bitch and snapped all the clips on the front of my cheap NZXT case, so when you looked at it funny the front would come off. I think it sat like that for about 4 years.

 

Had a hardrive precariously balancing on top of a case with an SSD hanging off it on the rig I built after that one, mainly because a drive caddy didn't fit around my radiator I think it sat like that for the best part of a year, the HDD did in fact fall off the top of the case on more than one occasion... it's still running to this day ~6 years later in a family members PC.

 

I'm an engineer so it's ok. Trust me.

My ITX build back in 2014 desperately needed more cooling, so I bought a Dremel and solved this problem by completely fucking up the Lian Li TU-200 case. And I added more lights, because damn, who needs ceiling lamps?

 

Southbridge still got roasted 6 months after that, so I had to maltreat a Zalman cooler onto the chip. Actually had to cut 50% of the fins so it would fit next to the CPU cooler. Also glued 4x 40mm fans on the back of the case (you can see them glowing blue behind the PSU), so in the end I had 11 fans in total. Since then it works like a charm!
