What's the most ghetto way you've gotten a PC to function the way you've wanted it?

H0R53

That would be me trying to access the BIOS on my headless NAS using a GPU that has the heatsink from a Gigabyte motherboard's southbridge.

Note that the NAS only has a 1x PCI-e slot that I had to mod so I wouldn't have to cut the GPU.

Just be careful you don't short the motherboard with the metal mount touching it, otherwise excellent idea.

Currently I have to wait with my LG monitor (22EA53) to warm up a bit, as it has some power supply issue, but I cannot find a way to disassemble it. It's some snap-in solution, doesn't seem to come apart from the outer edge, might work from the inner edge if I was strong enough, but I also fear from breaking the LCD or the frame itself.

Back then we had some dodgy Pentium 1 motherboard that didn't work if it was installed in the case, so it sat on a few magazines with wires hanging out of it to the various devices.

-My first PC was a drawer. Literally, it was built into a dresser drawer, originally as an HTPC (as our media center was a dresser at the time). My dad actually did that, and I wouldn't call the build janky 'cause it was actually very well done -Though of course when it became my PC I just set the drawer next to my desk. Pretty sure it was like that for about a year, though I can't remember precisely.

-The power switch in either my second or third case stopped working after a while, so my power switch was a metal spudger until I replaced the case.

-I've never actually bought a good monitor. I just sort of acquire them and use the best ones I have in my setup. I currently have, from left to right, a Westinghouse 1280x1024 monitor, an AOC 1080p monitor, an HP 1440x900 monitor, and a Thinkvision 1280x1024 monitor. The HP monitor has a broken DVI connector, so I have to use VGA -All the others use DVI. After I got a 980ti, I kept the 780 in my system because I didn't have the right adapters to run them all off one card, but I've since found that it actually does well as a PhysX card.
-Until recently, the Westinghouse monitor was mounted to my desk with two clamps and a Cribbage board.

-For about 2 months I ran 8GB+4GB+2GB+2GB RAM, as I had lent out my other 8GB stick to someone who had built a new PC because something happened (can't remember what) with their RAM.

-When I got an H110i GT, I found that the 140mm fans blocked a structural support and didn't allow my face panel to seat properly. I just tore the structural support out.

-I've booted a friend's PC while holding the cooler on manually.

-At some point I started having problems with my network connection, went through a couple different wireless dongles and no luck. Didn't have an Ethernet jack in the room, so I tried those powerline adapters or whatever they're called, and they didn't work out so well. I then took out our bulk spool of Cat5e cable and made a 50ft Ethernet cable (I crimped the terminal with a Flathead screwdriver) and ran it along the ceiling between rooms with blue painter's tape. I'm actually still using that cable, just not in the same location.

-I found the back Ethernet jack to be too much of a pain to access frequently, so I bolted a Netgear GS108 to the side of my case with standard case screws, motherboard standoffs, and a random set of washers, then made a shorter (paracord sleeved!) Ethernet cable to connect it to my back I/O. I have since considered trying to make an adapter to power it off of my PSU, or alternatively mounting a power strip inside the case, but haven't actually done that yet.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.

I have two Delta fans  with no guards on an externally mounted radiator (didn't fit in the case).  When they're running at 5,500 rpm they are useful for amputating fingers and chopping veggies for dinner.

My first PC... Power block fan had this weird loud noise. Which I ignored obviously... eventually it stopped, and my PC started freezing, because I ignored, or did not even know that it stopped... Back then I was still a kid and had no idea what was wrong with it or how to fix it... My dad refused to fix it for me, because of how many times I broke it before that... So, back then I tried to fix a computer by myself, for the first time (that was like 6-7 years go.. I was like 12-13...). Well, eventually I opened the case and after "researching" and "testing" I realized that something was wrong with the power block, because it had a cooler... and it was not moving... Then I took it out and after doing more research on Google I found out that I needed to put oil in the fan... (also there was thicc dust in the power block...) So, then I found that "oil thing" and I would have to order it from somewhere... and I did not want to wait for it to arrive, etc. In short, I ended up putting food oil in there and sealed it with some rubber and tape...

That computer still works to this day. It was decent back then, with Nvidia 9500 GT 1GB, 2 gigs of ram - AMD athlon...

How do  I signature? >.>

I always have the side panel of my PC open with the air conditioner blowing into it. It is the only way that I can keep the graphics card cool(R9 390X).

My buddy has the R9 390X 8GB edition and he's using an OEM case (XPS 9000 series). I zip tied a 120mm fan to the front and it's working fine.

Not sure if this counts since it's about the monitor and not the system...

I'm not 100% sure what type of panel my second monitor has, but it's a type that causes the colors to wash out if it isn't directly facing you. Since I live in a college dorm, and space/options are limited, I decided to use a combination of zip ties and string to suspend it from the ceiling at the correct angle.

Now I just can't let an RA in my room. Ever.

Uh my current build log :P Poopietary dell mobo, and mobo tray, wood between the tray and the pc case tray to give enough clearance to fit where the io bracket is supposed to be.

Going to have 4 or 6 pc fans strapped to the outside of my server case for more cooling on those poor drives. Only 2 fans and no air pressure lol

Mine isn't that janky as I use a laptop, but it's still sad. I haven't bought a chair for my desk since I don't want to clean it off, so I use these organizer bins and arrange them in a rectangle and put my laptop on it. And I haven't bought a mouse pad, ever I just use this book I haven't read yet and I've had it for over 4 years now. So basically my whole setup is on the floor and I sit against my bed. When I don't use the bins I use my laptop as the mouse pad since the book doesn't work when my laptop is on my lap.

After reading this, it really sounds depressing... :(

When I didn't know much about computers, I found out that I could cool my Nvidia 7300 LE by using a can of compressed air and spraying it under the heatsink. Before, the temperatures we're 80C while playing Minecraft, but I managed to reduce it to 70C!

It was a few months later when I took the card out of my PC and saw that the GPU didn't have any thermal paste, and wasn't actually touching the heatsink...

On that same system, the back of the motherboard is visibly discolored where the northbridge chipset was. The rest of the mobo was bright green, but that one area was lightly browned, most likely because of how darn hawt that chipset got.

Nothing too serious, I've had to take a hacksaw to my case before to fit in a graphics card, I've also had to hacksaw a side window fan because it was interfering with a tall CPU cooler.

Had the fans crap out on my graphics card once so fashioned a plastic tube to funnel air from the front case intakes to cool the card until I could get a replacement.

I was getting a Hackintosh together, and out of all my systems the only one that worked was a Dell OptiPlex 780 SFF. It’s integrated graphics don’t work right with El Capitan. So I put in a full size GPU (just crammed over the slot brace) and it failed to post due to how much power that card draws. So I put in a different card and remembered that it had a dead fan, but it was all I had that worked properly with El Capitan. I took the HDD fan out of the caddy and put a piece of it into a lower PCI slot to blow on the back of the card. I’m using a 2.5” Samsung SpinPoint drive, so it doesn’t need much cooling. The GPU still gets too hot to touch, but it doesn’t cause any issues. I just don’t like to leave it on.

Main System: Phobos

Secondary System: York

This was 5 years ago so i hadn't blown my computer out for 2 years, I opened it up and there was a solid coating of dust on the mother board and about 2MM of it caked on the fan heatsink. The result wasn't so "cool ghetto" because after this everything went haywire.

I had a laptop with awful thermals which would overheat to 90°C when playing games for long oeriods of time. I found that the best way to keep it cool was to aim a desktop fan at the vent/keyboard at all times while gaming. Everyone always asked why it sounded like I was playing in a tornado xD
