Acer announced a 43" 4K monitor with HDR in Japan

snowComet

Yesterday (6th July 2017) Acer Japan announced a new 43" 4K monitor in Japan, under the ET430K series, model name "ET430Kwmiiqppx"

On Amazon Japan's description page,

"【Acer HDR Ready対応】

Acer HDR ReadyモニターはHDR10に対応可能なグローバル ディミングエッジ型のスケーラーチップを搭載。実物に近い高い色再現性を達成。"

via Google Translate:

"[Acer HDR Ready compatible]

The Acer HDR Ready monitor is equipped with a global dimming edge type scaler chip that can support HDR 10. Achieve high color reproducibility close to the real thing."

Earlier this year Acer launched a 4K 43" monitor name "ET430K", with the model name "ET430Kwmiippx". The new monitor is pretty much the same as the old one, so they both have an IPS panel with 5ms response time, HDMI 2.0 ports, a mini Displayport, a Displayport, and others. But as the title suggested, the new monitor "ET430Kwmiiqppx" is HDR ready ("Acer HDR Ready", supports HDR10), according to Acer. Pls feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this monitor currently is the largest HDR-ready 4K monitor.

This monitor will run 4K @60Hz, but there are no mentions of supporting G-Sync or FreeSync on the product page, thus I guess this monitor didn't support either G-Sync or FreeSync. The monitor will be available in Japan on 21st July for ¥75,384 (~$665), according to Amazon Japan, and currently no words on pricing and availability outside Japan.

Acer has by far the worst nomenclature. Seriously, get with the times and make something your consumers can understand! Though, tbh I'd love to know what that long line of numbers and letters actually means.

That price is pretty awesome though. 2018, year of cheaper large displays?

I believe the HDR10 standard is about 1000-1500 nits or so.

FTFY.

I want a monitor that existing cards have the horsepower to provide a fitting frame rate.

Yeah, I think that's why they say "HDR Ready". As in, it can handle HDR data and it does the best it can with it, but being only 350nits means that it is far from what the data is meant for.

They shouldn't be allowed to claim that if the panel can't fulfill the needs of the standard.

Projector get away with being advertised as 1080p compatible when they only display a resolution of 800x600, makes it so hard to find a true 1080p projector.

I wonder if it's different since it's a desktop monitor.  Like, we all talk about how many Nits you should see on an HDR TV but that's on a screen typically viewed from 10 or more so feet away.  On a desk however you're looking at more like 18-36 inches viewing distance.  1000-1500 nits could be harmfully bright at that viewing distance.

I thought so too. But the advanced monitors with FALD (full array local dimming) will hit 1000 nits. Like the upcoming curved ultrawides with HRD and 200hz. But yes, they will a ton.

Addendum: Do be aware, that HDR does not require the entire monitor to show 1000 nits all over at once. Only bright spots/areas.

They didn't claim "HDR Premium" which is the mark for those that have HDR10 support and 1000nits+ (512nits for OLED). "HDR Ready" is just "I support HDR10 signals".

And yes, it's stupid. "HDR" should mean "HDR Premium", while "HDR Premium" should mean 12bit and 10 000nits

No, not different. The point of reaching 1000nits is to be able to provide a high enough contrast (0.05nits to 1000nits in the same picture, or 0.005 to 512nits for OLED). So 350nits just isn't proper HDR, in any way. It will still give a better picture than SDR though, as SDR is only for 0.05 to 100nits, so extending the range to 350nits will still help. it's just not what HDR content will be designed for, so you can get some washed out results where highlights are simply clipped (so everything that is supposed to be 350nits or more is shown as 350nits, removing a lot of granularity in the picture)

According to spec, Dell's fitst HDR monitor, UP2718Q, has a brightness around 400 cd/m² (typical) and 1,000 cd/m² (peak)....

Really? but can your 1080Ti give us Metalocalypse Season 5?

...don't think so.

On a real note, I think we'd see HDR10 monitors spread in the PC market before Season 5 :P

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Define "fitting frame rate"

Cause for me, there's plenty of cards capable of running games @ 4K/60fps. Some you may have to adjust settings though (managed expectations FTW!)

On topic: It's about damn time they started blurring the lines between a Monitor and a TV.
