So I got a call from my ISP a few days ago...

I don't understand why ISPs or cell providers think people are happy with data caps.  It's like between that and bs tactics such as jacking up bills if and when they feel like it that companies are trying to piss off customers and make them switch to a competitor.  Or in the case of @Zodiark1593 ditch them entirely.

They don't. Its to keep cable service alive by fighting streaming, like vue and netflix. And for many they are the only ISP

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Too bad some benevolent super rich person wouldn't just make their own badass ISP that is available EVERYWHERE and offers top of the line service and speeds.  Including reasonable pricing, good customer service, no data caps and your choice of mint on your pillow.  lol

We need that.  So badly.

well the problem is the ISPs that exist basically legally force competition to not exist. They control existing infrastructure (even placement on poles) and prevent new infrastructure from being added. They even shut down local municipalities that decide they want to add their own service for their population. It's really interesting, it's a pretty deep problem.

they've kinda given up. Also, as good as it appears to be initially, I don't want a major company with internet based services like google or amazon providing my internet service, seems like it would be less neutral in the long run

Isn't that only if a very few cities?  And I thought I'd heard somewhere that they were stopping expansion or being forced to stop or something else?

Hard to do with a gigabit port. I don't have a 10gig nic or switch yet, however each room is wired for ethernet . I have a custom SONET drop for work purposes. I have a workstation and laptop that does hourly back ups with our servers. Plus my own system and devices.

In mexico your internet speed is measured by tacos and tequila transfer rates

Went to my parents' house (who recently moved to rural County Derry) and they get 72Mb in the middle of nowhere, so jealous. I don't even get that in the city centre (I mean I could but I'd be paying so much more for it).

You have 130Mbps up on Xfinity? How? They cant do any better than 35 Mbps up on their gigabit tier.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I get 250/10 and being a YouTuber it's horrible. I am forced to have Comcast and since FiOS isn't in our are but 5 miles away it's in my parents, Comcast gave them a better deal ($40 less per month and $250 prepaid card.). But since they are in a FiOS area and I'm not they got a better deal. I need 1Gbps FiOS badly.
