[UPDATE: More specs] Apple replaces iPad Air 2 with new iPad

It's about the same as doing it on a laptop but with better battery life and being much more convenient. The only time it sucks using the iPad and I want a mouse and keyboard is when I'm creating spreadsheets in excel. It is annoying trying to edit equations and entering a lot of data on a touch screen.

Yeah. Office, word, emailing. Some people will use their phones for emails, but I like a bigger screen with a lot of surface area.

Email's ok, but office. Must have a ton of patience for that.

Then just use a laptop? Seriously I think it's been years since I last saw someone using a tablet...

Like I said in my post, much easier to travel with and less weight to carry.

I know there are light laptops, but I got a tablet, more than enough for what I need...

You'll be surprised, I travel back and from London to Birmingham for family visits. I've seen people use tablets..

Why so much patience? I use Google docs and then export as doc file or sometimes keep it as doc file.

If you have a keyboard for it it's not bad, it can still be more portable than most laptops. Of course it depends on the task, but office and web browsing are feasible.

I chill at home with an apple tablet. I've been looking forward to updating it actually. I still have a pg348q, gtx 1080 and multiple monitors. I can enjoy both worlds.

This Ipad has very little differences to its predecessor, doesnt it?!.... Apple loves to cut corners as much as possible and sell "rebadged products" as high as possible and now i see that clearer than daylight. On the other hand, every other manufacturer like Samsung and LG do the same with tablets, but this one is specially annoying since Apple is pretty much the only manufacturer that is relevant and i dont see how competition would even affect them xD.

Sure, it will be fast and it will be an update for many, but its improvements are so thin it makes your enthusiast soul cry .-.

They dropped the price while increasing price and performance, probably the most consumer friendly move Apple has made for the past couple years haha

I use the 9.7" Pro for work/personal use. Can't remember the last time I used a laptop.

When I'm on the go I want something compact that can do basic tasks, and iOS is perfect for that. If I need something to type on, I have a bluetooth keyboard somewhere in the car + word.

Everything else is done on my workstation.

I'm really not sure what you're complaining about here.

It basically looks like an iPhone 6s/SE in hardware specs, and those aren't slouches by any means. Not to mention that's a pretty decent price slapped on 'em too.

The naming scheme is teriable. Really apple you had to call it "iPad" why not just stick with the mini, air and pro naming scheme.

This is actually the first time I've every been slightly interested in an iPad. The pricing before was fart too expensive, but at $330 it's starting to become viable. Also a huge market for iPads is small businesses. I see them everywhere in restaurants or small shops because they can use them with whatever payment software they use. It's probably the perfect place for a tablet, takes less space than a computer but still easy to see and use.

Back on topic:

This is a let down for me.

Price is OK.

the SOC is not. I'd really like an A10 chip instead of the A9 but I recognize that this is a lower tier budget iPad.

If we're basing performance just on the number of cores, we might as well say an FX-9590 with 8-cores is better than an i7-6700K with just four cores.

The A8X chip maybe three cores but it's clocked at 1.5 GHz and uses a 22 nm process whereas the A9 might just be dual core but it has a slightly higher clock speed at 1.85 GHz and it uses a more power efficient 16 nm (TSMC) or 14 nm (Samsung) process.

According to the updated spec sheet, it gets more storage. So, I guess it's more reasonable now.

More efficient architecture does not automatically mean more performance.

Most of the perf improvement from A8 to A9 came from clockspeed bumps with a minor IPC improvement.

A8X was a 1.4/1.5GHz triple core SOC.

A9 would be slightly slower than the A8X without architecture IPC improvement as shown below.

This assumes IPC is the same.

2x 1.86GHz = 3.72

3x 1.4GHz = 4.2

Not really. I teach with my iPad in the classroom, and get a fair amount of light productivity work done on it, and I find that the iPad gets the job done very well in this regard.

I'm effectively multiplying the amount of cores by their clock speed.

The A8X has been known to run at between 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz.

A9 is not a "upgrade" from A8X. It's a side grade. It's like going from a GTX 770 to a GTX 1050.

Sure, some areas are better but others are worse.
