$50 left over for investing into something you want.

Is it possible to create an x99 system for less than $650 US? I plan to build a system and I would love to take advantage of the x99 benefits, but I am currently on a budget and my current laptop is broken. I don't need good graphics as I intend to use this for basic work station tasks, just something with HDMI so I can run my monitor. I Also plan to be upgrading in about a year. Waiting is not an option as my current laptop is broken, like I said before. (out of warranty for almost 2 years now, would cost more to fix than the laptop was worth) Thanks for any advice you can offer. -HalfALifeLeft

Just do a Ryzen build if you want the benefits of X99 and are on a budget.

But would ryzen be cheaper than x99 in a $650 dollar build? Cheapest available ryzen CPU is still $330 and with the rest of the system costs, will it be cheaper?

Try finding an X99 CPU for less than $330, or an X99 board for less than $150.

Without a GPU, yes. The only thing you want to pay attention to is if there are Intel specific technologies that help in your workflow. Not sure what the specific use case is other than

I meant compatible with the LGA 2011-3 socket, that was my bad. But I see that ryzen can be cheaper.

ryzen has no igp and you want to actually be able to use most programs.. one would assume it won't work on the default MS display driver

I would think that you needed an output for a monitor, unless you want to truly be using the PC blind.

Yep, there is ways to do so if you don't mind buying 2nd hand and browsing forums.

It how I managed to nab two used x99 systems.  Well, one equals over a grand but that with all parts but a chip that can hit 4.8GHz.  The other was $130 for the CPU and $125 for the board.  Note though, that CPU is a Xeon E5-2670V3 ES model.

I personally don't trust 2nd hand parts. Three times I was sold a part that claimed "slightly used." both died the day after and I couldn't contact the sellers.

Reason I only buy from people that have a good amount of rep points (home forum uses a rep system).  TPU which is another forum uses another site to track sells and buyer rep.

Most of my parts are 2nd hand: PSU, SSDs, CPUs (all of them are 2nd hand), GPUs (all of them are 2nd hand).

I think the last thing I bought new was DDR4 RAM.
