Is the 4790k still "Dat Boi"?

Not too many moons ago, Linus did a video where he explained that the 4790k may have been the best CPU out there for gaming at the time (he will make several disclosures with and around that statement I'm sure), and explained that the higher-clocks due to no "unnecessary" cores and extra intel awesomeness make it possibly the best choice for gamers. This was a while ago, and we've since had many releases of both chips and architectures.

Here's my question: --> What is the new 4790k! <--

Is there a new one? Is it still a bawlin' move to buy one? Are recent game releases taxing the multi-core end of the spectrum more? Massive-world survivalist games with a bazillion nodes and dinosaurs?

Could all answers please include supporting factual evidence, or at least don't talk our of your ar... umm... hat. I don't want to read through 10 posts of "I get my 60 fraps using an i3 and your mum is stupid".

what

Since Intel basically releases the same chips every year, I'd say that the 7700k is the new 4790k

To be fair, they've added a pin to the socket since then...

Well the general statement of "i5 is for gaming" is dead/dying. I'm not saying if someone has a 6600k they should go upgrade to a 6700/7700k etc - I'm saying when we give advice for new builds, we should always try and fit an i7 into the budget provided it can be and it doesn't gimp the rest of the system.

I got a 4790K two months ago.   The 7700K isn't that much better.

Still using mine, X1700 is giving me the upgrade itch though, wife would kill me, I only got the 1080 4 months ago.... Also, it's not really needed as you said, the 4790k is still an awesome chip and I can get 4.93ghz outta mine!

The 7700k is better but not by a lot. In watch dogs 2 you can get about 10 extra frames when upgrading to a 7700k.

You said Linus recently made a video about the 4790k being the best processor, are you sure about that? I doubt he would say that very much since it is 2 generations old now and definetly not great

I'm having trouble getting more than 4.4GHz out of mine.  I'm only using a Hyper 212 Evo though.  What cooler do you have?

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

I didn't say he said it in this weeks releases lol. It was more or less contemporaneous for that CPU.

I love mine. I have it overclocked to 4.8ghz constant with a Kraken X52. I use it for streaming and gaming. I will say while streaming it for sure isn't always a happy camper. I recently upgraded to 3440x1440 and it struggles to stream now. I am contemplating going with an X99 setup to free up some processing power for streaming.... Knowing I will lose a few FPS due to the down clock of a 6800k.

You can sit on a 4790k for a good while and be fine in most use cases I imagine.  There's always something better on the horizon but that doens't mean your hardware is immediately obsolete.  Only you know your boi best. :)

I've been sitting on an i7-980X for seven years, and even I don't need to upgrade yet xD

The 4790k is still a badass processor for sure. It is definitely still "dat boi" for the folks who own one.
