On the "does anyone use iMacs?" front: I'm using a 5K iMac right now (the late 2015 model with Skylake and Radeon M395 video).

It's definitely not a hardcore gaming machine, but it is pretty awesome for work and general entertainment.  You don't have to full-screen a YouTube video to see every pixel in 1080p.  And it's the ultimate foil to everyone who claims that Macs are always overpriced... ever price out a 5K display by itself?  Even the price-cut LG UltraFine 5K (which only just came out) is $1K, and the Windows alternatives are more like $2K or above.  It's like you're buying a 5K display with a free computer attached.

With that said, my beef isn't that the iMac exists, it's that it's the only desktop Apple seems to care about.  Both the Mac mini and Mac Pro are sorely in need of updates, and I'd argue that they need to rethink at least the Mac Pro.  It might be tough to go back to a tower design with PCIe slots and such (Apple would basically have to pay OEMs to make Mac drivers for those products), but I suspect that's what many pros want.  At least, it'd be nice to see Apple lower the price of entry (say, by offering single-GPU or even Core-based models) and start using NVIDIA graphics again.

Maybe this time they'll relocate the microphone and IO to the front....or sides....or....bottom....or anywhere that's not a quarter of the way up the rear....no wait, nevermind, they're Apple. It'll never happen.

100% they're gonna gimp IO and make it stupidly thin to compromise performance.

One of my favourite things in the Op

"the desktop is good because it allows to add more memory and storage"

Yeah, because you totally can't get a 1tb Ssd and 32gigs of ram on practically any laptop.

Something tells me that Apple doesn't want to make a $3,000 (minimum!) all-in-one whose usefulness goes out the window if you're not an artist.  It makes the $1,800 5K iMac look downright proletarian by comparison.

Perhaps a simplistic, underpowered, pretty desktop with no ports.

I know that's supposed to be a dig at the iMac, but it's not really going to fly when it seems unlikely that you've used one.  I actually like the Surface Studio on a basic level -- my beef is that you're basically paying a $1,300 premium for the privilege of drawing on it.  While the iMac isn't exactly a trivial purchase, $1,800 is easier to justify if you just want a really nice display with a reasonably quick built-in computer.

(And yes, it has plenty of ports.)

I don't care.

In the same way many won't care about that I say that.

So yes, this is pointless.

Yeah! I seem them frequently in colleges/universities. But only a dozen units at most.

A typical $300 refurbished desktop from Dell (i5 2400 + 4gb of RAM + 240gb 5400rpm HDD) can do pretty much anything. So they make up the bulk of PCs. If I wasn't a gamer, I'd just buy one for myself. It's just perfect, and it's the size of a cereal box and it's quiet. You could also add a low-profile GTX 1050 and game on!

Like someone said, the iMAC is an interesting proposition because of the 5K screen
