Tim Cook: "Great desktop Macs are in the works"

Master Disaster

It looks like desktop Macs might not be dead afterall. Apple CEO Tim Cook has posted to Apples internal employee noticeboard that new desktop macs are coming. This post has been verified as accurate by Techcrunch.

Quote

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company’s commitment to desktop Mac computers remains strong, despite a glaring omission of the product line in a slate of recent MacBook announcements. Cook’s comments on the matter were posted to Apple’s internal employee message board, which were then obtained and verified by TechCrunch today.

His message was

Quote

The desktop is very strategic for us. It’s unique compared to the notebook because you can pack a lot more performance in a desktop — the largest screens, the most memory and storage, a greater variety of I/O, and fastest performance. So there are many different reasons why desktops are really important, and in some cases critical, to people.

The current generation iMac is the best desktop we have ever made and its beautiful Retina 5K display is the best desktop display in the world.

Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops. If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap.

Nobody should worry about that.

Obviously that's a very vague message and doesn't offer any info on which models will be updated, I'm guessing iMac is guaranteed an update but as for Apples pro lines, who knows?

Quote

It’s unclear if Cook is referencing just the company’s iMac all-in-one line, or if he also intended his statement to include the Mac mini and the Mac Pro. But the lack of updates to all three is a genuine concern for fans of Apple’s desktop computers.

The Mac mini was updated nearly every year from 2007 to 2012, and then once in 2014. Meanwhile, the Mac Pro was updated nearly every year from 2006 to 2013. That machine hasn’t received an upgrade in more than three years, when Apple first revealed its overhauled cylindrical design. The star of the desktop line — the iMac — is more up to date. Its current iteration has been upgraded annually for the last five years, with the 2015 model getting a 5K retina option. It, too, was left out in this fall’s MacBook refresh.

Industry insiders seem to think Mac Pro is dead and Tim Cook will concentrate on iMac only moving forward

http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/19/14017952/apple-ceo-tim-cook-imac-mac-pro-desktop-computers

https://techcrunch.com/2016/12/19/apples-tim-cook-assures-employees-that-it-is-committed-to-the-mac-and-that-great-desktops-are-coming/

My thoughts? Well I'm pretty outspoken about how I feel towards Apple but I'm glad they haven't killed desktops off. Personally I don't see a chance in hell of them updating the Mac Pros.

One other rumour is that Nvidia are holding off on releasing Pascal support for macOS because Apple and Nvidia are in a deal to have Nvidia GPUs in the new desktops. I should be very clear, this is the talkings of a few people over on a Hackintosh forum and its totally unsubstantiated so I'd suggest you assume its false. Just adding it here because it is relevant.

We'll talk when they remove the glossy screen thank you. Before anyone calls me out, I've had experiences with iMacs and the glossy part of the screen is hands down horrible.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

I believe I showed great restraint because I so wanted to go off on one of my Apple rants in the OP but I didn't.

Despite my feelings towards Apple this is still good news and deserves to be posted fairly.

Hey that would actually be revolutionary. Being able to plug yourself into a computer and have it all inside you like some kind of cyborg. That will be an awesome day.
