Intel prepares Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X, to cost $470-1800

Intel is planning to unveil its next-generation top-end Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X series CPUs in the third quarter of 2017,

At CES 2017, Intel is expected to unveil processors including Core i7-7700K/7700, Core i5-7600K/7600/7500, Core i3-7320/7300/7100, Pentium G4620/4500/4560 and Celeron G3950/3930 as well as its low-power models including the Core i7-7700T. Intel's Z270 and H270 chipsets will also make their debut at the show.

According to Digitimes, Intel is preparing to launch their next gen high-end processors in Q3 2017, which is most likely at Gamescom during August in Germany. Price range could be NT$15,000 to NT$57,000, that's $468 to $1,780 US dollars. Both types of cpus will run on 2066 with X299 chipset. In the mean time, Intel's next gen mainstream processor Kaby Lake will out out soon, with the possibility they might be revealed during CES, which is in January. Kaby Lake wil still run on the same socket as Skylake along with a new chipset Z270, and Z170 users won't be left out, your platform will run the new CPUs too. Z270 adds additional PCIe lanes and support for Intel Optane. Price could just be estimates and let's hope they are because Kaby Lake-X is said to be a quad core, where it lead to less expensive upgrade path, since you won't have to spend more on a new board, just to get a CPU with more core counts. Quad Core Kaby Lake-X for nearly $500?! That's the 2nd or 3rd most expensive quad core in history. Most expensive was the Q6600 when it just came out at nearly $800 dollars!

2066 is also for server, but 3467 is for the customizable platform that's pin-compatible with Xeon Phi. You'll see E5 Xeons on 2066 certainly.

Of course socket 2066 will have Xeon E5 and even socket 1151 have server cpus too. What I meant was for those who really want to see a socket 3467, needs to head deep into the server side of things to even have a chance to see it. In other words, want a socket 3467 then prepare to spit out $$$$$.

This chipset type typically follows a 3 year cycle. There's an agreement between Intel and server manufacturers to keep this longer cycle to keep product development costs down, whether this is an official agreement I don't remember anymore.

This is why the desktop platform is always running newer architecture as there is no artificial limitation. It's much cheaper to design desktop motherboards when new chipsets come out than server motherboards, which also go through much more rigorous hardware compatibility validation.

Server platform's number one concern is stability, performance has a lower importance, and one of the best ways to ensure that is through consistency.

I doubt it will happen but it would be nice if the 6800K replacement has more PCI-E lanes. I'm happy with my 5820K but having a faster option with more lanes would tempt me to upgrade. Otherwise it would have to make a pretty noticeable difference in games for me to drop several hundred dollars on a new CPU and board.

so the biggest improvement of the platform basicly will be the dmi3.0 bus.

Not really that interesting for users currently on Haswell-e / Broadwell-e.

Unless you want to expend your system with tons of storage.

But you basicly would be better of with a nas for that.

Also the Kabylake-X 4 core 8 threads cpu, not sure what sense that thing would make.

Unless intel is going to kick their 6 core Skylake-X chips right up to $500+ prices again.

That would be hillarious.

Good for my used 6 Core dreams :). Everyone should have already known that Skylake X would be on a different chipset/Socket considering the VRM management (I believe thats what haswell had) was moved back off the chip.

X299 you say?

Well forget Zen then. Unless they come out with something with 8 DIMM slots.

Skylake has, at best, a 5% IPC improvement over Broadwell. Kaby lake has a 0.00% improvement over Skylake.

Zen is set to have the same rough IPC as Broadwell, and their Octocore/16t, if rumor is set to be believed, is going to sell for a fair deal ($500) less than Intel's current offerings.

In other words, for 6 and 8 core systems, unless Quad channel and 65+GB of RAM become advantageous, forget X299. That's assuming Zen doesn't support either though.

Thanks for the info. But I'm still probably going to go X299.

Why? Because I want to build an insanely powerful, top of the line system. So I can occasionally game, and browse forums and Imgur lol

A 5% difference between Zen and SkylakeX IPC means that Zen can average a 200MHz OC over Skylake-X's highest OC (assuming it's between 4 and 5GHz), and they'll be equals in terms of performance.

That's also making assumptions on the overclocking capability of Zen, but still something to consider before anyone sits in the AM4 v Z270 v X299 camps.

AMD also can potentially push higher stock clocks, which is important to those not looking to overclock.

I'm not trying to sway you to get Zen. I'm trying to sway you to wait until we have something real to go off of.

We've already got Kaby and Skylake chips, and we can make accurate generalizations based on what we have already.

Fair enough. Don't have the money for it right now either.
