2016: IE and Edge lose 331 Million Users

suicidalfranco

Although all MS efforts to push Edge, it's home made browser exclusive to W10, the combined marketshare of IE and Edge has gone from it's high point of 800 million users from december 2015 to 466 Million October of this year, courtesy of net applications latest marketshare research.

Surprising bit: Firefox rose from MS fall in the last two months

Quote

Net Applications pegged the combined user share of Internet Explorer (IE) and Edge at 28.4% for October, a fall of 2.3 percentage points. The month's decline was the second-largest ever for Microsoft's browsers, behind only May's plummet of 2.7 points.

Unlike in most previous months, Microsoft's bane was not Google's boon, but instead Mozilla's. Firefox's user share jumped nearly 2 percentage points, to 11.1%. Atop an almost-as-large increase in September, Mozilla's Firefox has stepped away from a precipice, and in two months recovered almost all the losses it incurred during the past year.

from the research we can also see that Chrome as remain stable at 55% of the total marketshare.

If I wanted to use reskinned Google Chrome, I would just use Google Chrome.

Better yet, I would use Vivaldi.

Yeah but opera is pretty lightweight and is just like google chrome, plus chrome likes to hog your ram.

Vivaldi actually looks really damn cool

It's really not bad, either. It works with basically every Chrome extension you'll use (it's a retooled Chromium with old Opera-like features).

I doubt there's been an upward trend for IE in the recent past, so this probably (<-conjecture) means Win 10 users were indeed trying out Edge, but didn't stick. Which could mean MS lost a chance to increase its browser userbase there. At the same type, it would mean the Edge nagging (see the other thread in this subforum) won't realistically do much for them. Unless the number of Win 10 users is much larger than the number of people trying and abandoning Edge, in which case they could still have a chance to attract new users - but they better have a convincing product by now, because users are unlikely to try twice if they find a good-enough alternative.

Those "users" were only people using Edge and IE on clean installs to install Chrome/Firefox/insertotherbrowserhere and then never opening it again.

Chrome being a ram hog doesn't really apply to stock Chrome.

I disagree. I basically run stock chrome (adblock and a dark theme), and it just chews through RAM. Plus there's a memory leak, so the RAM use doubles after about a week (and I don't like having to relaunch chrome and my 30+ tabs).

Sadly it does... especially when you keep stuff open for longer times. I have the absolute bare minimum of extensions (ABP & Evernote) and it can easily hog gigabytes of RAM with just a few pages here.

On Edge... come on... it sucks. Even one of the most basic of actions - pulling out a tab to open a new window - isn't available. Like... WTF? Even IE had that functionality!

Why not use folders and put your tabs in it so you can open them all with one click?

Or just right click -> resume session and it reopens everything you had open previously...

Or just set chrome to open to your previously open tabs?

They're all pinned tabs, so they all reopen everytime I close/open chrome. But it's still annoying.

It's actually really annoying/funny.

Chrome rips one of my two laptop's ram to shreds (8GB on a ivy i7-hq) IF and only IF it and office programs are left up for a while.

On another laptop with 8GB of ram (broadwell-u), I rarely if ever have issues even playing two videos at once.

On my desktop  (32GB ram) I've only once seen chrome+system exceed 8GB and that was playing like 4 videos at once for the lolz (and to prove a point to someone else). But it does have 20+ GB ram cached at any moment so maybe the caching is actually what keeps chrome from leaking.

YES, SWITCH TO OPERA EVERYBODY

Opera is Opera in name alone, use Vivaldi (which is being developed by the original Opera team, and therefore keeping up the original spirit of the browser) instead.
