It'll probably suit me well until maybe the end of next year, but I'll be looking forward to upgrading sometime mid next year. Haven't felt any lack of performance out of it yet.

Assuming it is in the negative sense, this bit about FMA was expected but makes me sad. For those that don't care about FMA, the 8 core might still be interesting if you need cores on a budget.

 

I'd also add, Intel ES can be down on clock compared to eventual retail, so there is still some chance of more clock before it hits the shops.

She's saying that based on the Blender test AMD showcased which anyone with more than half a brain knew was rigged from the word go.

I don't make that connection with what's posted. If they truly have inside info, I'd hope it is based on more than just that public Blender demo.

 

From my personal perspective, I care about FMA performance and having adequate cache size and/or ram bandwidth to feed it. Released architecture diagrams suggest it is about half a modern Intel core in potential. I was kinda hoping I got that wrong by missing some detail or they're doing something different, and that they'll be competitive.

AMD Polaris has leaked shipping manifests before. She's not a tester like Dresdenboy, whose tests we do have showing Zen getting beaten handily by a 5960X at the same clocks in AOTS.

 

There will be some interesting behavior in that memory loads directly into L2 and having L3 be a victim cache, reducing some of the cache miss penalty if data isn't in L3, but eating more memory bandwidth to do it.

I think we are all focusing on pure numbers at this point and too much speculations. If the price for a true 8 core with HT is around $300-$400 and performs decent. Nothing like a 6900K but that is over $1000.

That's too low - it's 1151 i7 pricing. Disappointment should be Bulldozer-level for prices to be that low.

I noticed while reading through this thread that people are estimating the eight core to be priced in the $300-500...

 

Let's be realistic. AMD is not a charity. They intend to do one thing only - make money.

 

From what I've gathered from all the rumours, benchmarks and info about the architecture itself, the most comparable CPU from Intel's side for the eight core Zen is the i7 5960X... which still costs around $800. AMD is not going to undercut them by such a significant amount.

 

I'd be expecting $600 minimum. And that's being generous.

That's open to a broad interpretation... As I've said before, AMD needs to make money. They're not going to undercut their competition by $300 from the get-go. They will price it accordingly to the market like they did in the past.

 

If they priced it $500, that means it's cheaper than the hexacore i7 6850K and only $70 more than the i7 6800K. That's bloody generous and honestly, a bit far-fetched.

 

The fact that people keep overhyping upcoming products such as this one only sets them up for disappointment. It happened with Polaris, it will happen again for this one. Guaranteed.

Something is not right here, so as we know 1 zen "cluster" will have 4 cores and a 65W tdp. so how can 2 zen "clusters"  ( 8 cores) only consume more 30W that one "cluster" and at same time have higher clock speed? I can only see two things apening here, the 8c/16T being 140W or a mistake in the clock speed of the 4c/8t and in reality is a 3.9ghz base clock and a 4.1/4.4 ghz turbo  chip

I'm fairly certain that they ditched modules............. But whatever. Maybe the quad core Chips are not very well binned and the 8 cores might be the cream of the crop binned chips......

It might be, but its too much of a diference there, and that would imply that we only gana see a and full of 8 cores.

they call it clusters/module.

 

Basically, all AMDs products are MODULAR, thus they can mix and match any of their IP into a single product. Thus 4 cores is a "cluster" or package or whatever.

 

They got GPU modules (contains 1 ACE, 64 shaders, X ROPs, X TMUs each), memory modules, IO modules and now, much like bulldozer, they are looking to expand this system so that the minimum package is 4 ZEN cores.
