Mmm, I'd love to have that for rendering with Blender/Maya. All the more reason to start working as soon as possible, I guess! Though, I have to wonder: How well does Blender handle that kind of hardware? Does it scale well?

For Blender the images you're working with probably do not break past 60MB, so honestly 1 24-core E7 Xeon would be the max you'd want to throw at it. For Maya, you're also generally not manipulating a whole skeleton, but part of it at a time. For the rendering portion, a good GPU is more important than a good CPU. This sort of workstation would be for heavy number crunching and being a render farm unto itself.

Okey I see, but wouldn't that mean that the argument of "4K textures" as a reason for the giant size of the game becomes invalid? since small things that won't fill up your whole screen won't reach the 4K pixel density of 3840x2160.
I admit that rendering everything in 4K needless in 4K resolution would cripple the game more then it would do good.

 

But my point in the first post was, if an game like Unreal Tournament 2004 can be made to run in 4K resolution and the textures scale along flawlessly and still keep decent quality, as demonstrated in this article of pcgamer, while requiring only 5.5gb of drive space then it still doesn't explain why this game (infinite warfare) is so big, assuming that all textures inside are 4K at most or to their desired highest resolution. admitted that  UT2004 has a lot less textures and details, but still you get the point.
People named uncompressed (audio) files before as one of possible reasons, but that would be useless since most of the quality is lost outside a studio set up.

So the question remains, why and how does it need that much data?

So when people are talking about texture for a 4K game... The textures themselves don't need to be 3840x2160, but for 1080p games they didn't need to be 1920x1080...

Since the rendering resolution is 4x that of 1080p, the textures will need to be 4x the size they were back when 1080p was the standard..

 

Rendering old games at 4K will make make it look better, but without downloading new textures, they old ones will not scale "flawlessly" unless they were excessively large to begin with. Textures designed for the game to be rendered in 4K will always look much better. 

 

You also have to keep in mind that the size is also affected by the number of textures. Larger games with more levels and more settings (settings location wise.. e.g. desert, forest, arctic, etc) will need more textures. Back in 2004 HD space was at a much bigger premium, so games tended to use smaller, repeatable textures... and they would have less variance.

 

There are really a ton of factors. It's not as simple as "this one game was this size, so this other one should be this size".

 

Personally, I have a lot of hard drive space, so I would rather games be big and have uncompressed instead of sacrificing asset quality for HD space. Others might prefer the smaller space if they're not able to capitalize on the full details of the game.. So it all depends who the game is catering to.

It would be nice if companies would offer two different versions of a game on installation.. A version with compressed assets, and one with uncompressed assets.

Man that title... so misleading xD

 

It's 130GB over TWO GAMES, not just Infinite Warfare. So with that split into two, it starts to lineup with recent AAA console releases/ports, in terms of storage size.

 

Does it seem a bit high individually? Yes. But we haven't seen the end results, so we cannot say much about what is "too much" these days.

 

For a PC user, this shouldn't be much of an issue, since large HDD's are incredibly cheap these days. Laptop gamers and console gamers may run into issues though, but as far as I'm aware, you're able to connect an external USB HDD to an XBO and install games there, so maybe it's not even that big of a deal? XBO supports USB 3.0 external HDD's, and increases your internal storage pool for games.

 

So the biggest problem I see with this, is potential internet Data Caps. Downloading 130GB could blow through a smaller data cap, or eat up a significant chunk of a medium sized cap. But if you're on Console, hopefully at least some of that data is being installed off the Disc (Though if I were to buy a console, I'd likely buy the digital versions of games anyway).
