Sony Vegas 14.0 released!

rattacko123

The long awaited upgrade to Sony Magix Vegas Pro 13 is out! (In case you didn't know, Magix owns the Vegas software now, they bought it from Sony a few months ago)

New features include new file format support such as H.265

Quote

New features in version 14.0

Added Smart Zoom, Smart Scale, and Smart adaptive deinterlacing to allow you to upscale clips for Ultra HD delivery (requires a supported NVIDIA, AMD/ATI, or Intel GPU).

Added a Vignette video effect.

Added support for working with high-frame-rate (HFR) clips.

Added hover scrub to the Trimmer for fast scrubbing.

Updated support for current BlackMagic Design hardware:

DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, 4K Pro, 4K Extreme, Studio 4K, SDI 4K, HD Extreme, Extreme 3D, Mini Monitor, and Mini Recorder.

Intensity Shuttle, Pro 4K, and Pro.

UltraStudio 4K Extreme, 4K, Pro, SDI, Express, Mini Monitor, and Mini Recorder.

Improved support for clips from RED ONE, EPIC, SCARLET, and WEAPON cameras.

Added Post lift, Post gamma, Post gain, and Dragon enhanced blacks controls to the R3D Decode Properties dialog.

Fixed an issue that caused certain clips to fail to load on upgraded RED WEAPON cameras with older firmware.

Fixed a crash that could occur when loading certain old RED ONE clips.

Fixed a color cast that could occur in clips shot with RED Motion Mount on the latest camera firmware.

Updated support for current AJA hardware.

Added a Resample mode drop-down list to the Video tab in the Project Properties dialog. You can use this control to set the default resample mode for your project video. To override the project resample mode, you can use the Force resample and Disable resample event switches.

Improved playback and editing performance when using a Dynamic RAM Preview cache size greater than 200 MB.

Improved gamma calculations for still-image sequence renders for 32-bit floating point projects. Now levels for 32-bit floating point (video levels) and 32-bit floating point (full range) with nonlinear gamma are more consistent with 8-bit levels.

Added a Group Video and Audio Events script (Tools > Scripting) to allow you to easily group audio and video events from an imported EDL.

Increased the top-end of the range of event Velocity envelopes to 1,000% to increase the maximum possible overall velocity of video on the timeline to 40 times normal speed (in conjunction with the Playback rate event property).

New artwork and icons for buttons and other interface elements give the application an updated, more modern look and feel.

Support for reading and writing HEVC/H265 files.

Native support for reading ProRes 422 files without the need for QuickTime.

Price is $599 for Vegas Pro, and $799 for Vegas Pro Suite

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Oh, yes I see that now... you realize that can be read two ways though right?  As in, "upgrade to" as if that;s the version being upgraded, or "upgrade to" as in that's the version you are getting.  Like, "your computer has to reboot to finish upgrading to Windows 10"? ;)

Anyone care to give me a run down of Vegas vs Premiere?

Vegas is more of an all in one solution, while premiere requires after effects to do things like motion tracking, motion blur, etc. The main advantage of vegas over premiere is the sheer amount of effects it has, and it supports the open FX standard. Premiere, however, has the advantage of being faster, and does everything you need for a basic editing program, but it doesn't have as many features as Vegas does.

What do you mean? v14 is released. "upgrade to 13" is out. the upgrade to 13 is 14. Makes sense to me?

Just started some testing with a 11 minute bioshock infinite recording unedited on my normal 21/9 settings in vegas14 trail, will show results when i get results compared to vegas13

finally finished some basic testing and i can tell that there is an improvement from 13 to 14
All tests were done in the MainConcept AVC/AAC(*mp4) format, just like always do in svp13

first i did a few renders without edits of a 2 minute 21:9 clip in beamng, raw size was 3.49 gig and in both svp13 and svp14 trail the size after render was around 377mb in svp13 and 379mb in svp14
HAlyi7H.jpg
uPg0Myo.jpg
HTwrS2K.jpg

KLP4zrT.jpg
gSfyLRv.jpg
fY9ZuJh.jpg

the average render time on sv13pro ended up beeing 5 minutes 20 seconds
the average render times in sv14pro trail ended up beeing 4minutes 44 seconds,
an average of 36 seconds saved per rendering

Next i hopped to a 4:50 minute 16:9 recording of black ops and renderd that 3 times on both aswell.
HfIrqE9.jpg
7hVOxES.jpg
Rj27jnZ.jpg

NkPyh1H.jpg
DPjkcmJ.jpg
a2pkrwd.jpg

the renderd file was 687 mb big on all renders in svp13 and 684mb in svp14

rendertimes in sv13pro ended up beeing 11 minutes 39 seconds on average
rendertimes on sv14pro trail ended up beeing 10minutes 8 seconds on average,
total time of 1 minute and 31 seconds saved on a 4:50 minute video render

then i did a single render of a 11:30 minute long recording from bioshock infinite and renderd on both 13 and 14 both in 21:9 with an added voice audiotrack
OOeGhAi.jpg
XGmCJZ8.jpg

the original file was around 12gig big and the renderd file was 1.92 gig on svp13 and 2.18gig on svp14

svp13 render time was 34minutes 24 seconds
svp14 trail was 29 minutes 9 seconds
total time of 5 minutes 15 seconds saved on a 11:30 minute video

Personally i think that vegas pro 14 currently is fairly disapointing in rendertime improvements and  isnt worth the money($599 for the non suite) for the time you save per render, especially not if you only use it for a hobby that isn't making any monitary returns like i do, also the lack of cuda or opengl accelerated rendering( as far as i can see) is something that is holding vegas 14pro back IMO, so i most likely will stick with vegas 13pro untill i realy need those 5 less minutes for a render of 11 minutes
On a positive note i havnt seen any higher cpu or memory usage when in vegas 14 is open not doing anything over vegas13 so that is a positive.

for those wondering these are my standard render settings

Hot damn a new Vegas release. I was sad when Sony announced they were halting development. Now if they can just have better GPU acceleration, that'd be great.
