Should game companies stop producing drm protection to stop pirates?

It looks like drm gets cracked very easy. Why would companies waste thousands of dollars or millions on drm if it does. It work? It makes the experience less enjoyable in my opinion. So should game companies stop making drm protection software?

Definitely. It just makes the paying users suffer even more. e.g. Denuvo Always Online, performance hits.

Simple DRM is fine to keep out the noobies that are too afraid to torrent. If DRM was removed entirely the amount of people that pirate games would skyrocket.

That said, it is critical that anti-piracy measures are taken to deter pirates from cracking the game for at least the length of time in which sales would be the strongest. Money talks; bullshit walks. Piracy hurts companies the most when their popularity is high, because more people want the game – a simple logical conclusion.

It was literally available DRM free since day fucking 1 as all GOG releases. The exact opposite if your claim in fact: it did perfectly well on sales and never had DRM.

Im talkling about it not having DRM protection. I know it did very well. But thats because most people didnt hear about it not having drms until recently afaik

This topic doesn't belong in the news section. This isn't news. As for the topic. Maybe? I wouldn't say that DRM is cracked easily. It took several months for just one Denuvo game to get a proper crack and several remain uncracked still. It's hard to argue against annoying pirates, as long as it doesn't inconvenience the end user. Denuvo mostly seems to handle that well, but it's debatable. It helps that it's cheap to purchase, making it very attractive to paranoid publishers.

 

As for Witcher 3. It's a good example of DRM not being a huge hinderance BUT it's one title and CDPR has spent years playing to the anti-DRM crowd and setting itself up as the defender of PC gaming and the savior of DRM-free games. They set themselves up so well that people were attacked on forums for criticizing Witcher 3's performance issues and bugs on launch. They're the DRM-free version of Valve at this point (though Valve's blind defense force seems to be dissipating these days).

Well no, the witcher three has been widespread for a long time now.

The only difference is that most torrent databases comply to valid DMCA claims against them on torrents. CDp Red has taken a stance to simply dmca torrents as they become available, and until recently its been very successful. The only reason more and more W3 torrents are becoming available is because of the influx of people due to the DLC launch, and CDp Red being unable to keep up with the sheer amount of fake KAT sites.

Nope. DRM only has to last the first couple weeks to give enough time for the majority of potential sales. Companies should be allowed to protect their content from being pirated.

So long as the DRM does not detract from the game, or from playing it, devs are free to do what they see fit.

Disliking one thing about a person does not morally bar you from being friends. Why should that morally bar me from buying the game? If it's good enough, I put up with it. If it's not, I don't.

I have used Linux exclusively for over a year, and am looking hard at installing Windows after all of this time, as an example. I hate it, but my job requires it to be so unless I feel like wasting weeks or months setting up my things in WINE.
