Not really. If you buy a product that can be improved over time, you expect it to be improved over time and not have its entire potential spunked on week 1 to just look good in the launch comparisons.

 

Most people do not buy graphics cards every 6 months, not even every 1 year or 2 years. The most common upgrade cycle of GPUs in the market is 3 years. That gives you 2.5 years of superiority over the competing product at the time than making the other choice would have.

 

It's a dead simple choice. Hell, even for used buyers, buying used AMD GPUs is almost always the smarter choice because the Nvidia cult is so self-deluded they even sell their used cards to secondary cultists for more money than the AMD GPU would cost used, even after the AMD GPU has surpassed that card.

Yeah I am not going to go CF or SLI top end this gen.

Why you ask. here is why:

1. This gen is kinda meh IMO

2. They are more expensive than last gen

3. "next gen" is not that far away

4. I am going to get a single card, so I can play games for the next year ( I have a very used 7950, also had two 780ti's but they broke)

 

Also this is just funny, I have known for a while that Volta should be here late 2017 and early 2018...

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

I'll agree that It's a grey area as to how much of GCN's hardware design was influenced by consoles. from top (API/drivers) to bottom (how the shaders are fed), I just can't see past AMD's need for console-like API's and game code injections in order to leverage all of the hardware. I also can't see past the fact that the design itself scales beautifully as you decrease the power limit, which is great for low power devices like an APU - where the cpu and gpu are perpetually starved for power (when both are under full load).

It is worth noting that even when using software to support some things, Nvidia's far superior drivers still results in less CPU dependency (as can be seen here in for example DOOM).

 

But doing things in software doesn't explain all of the difference. Another reason for why Nvidia doesn't see as big gains from DX12/Vulcan is because Nvidia has not been struggling to keep their GPUs fed in DX11. AMD GPUs has been very underutilized because of their poorer drivers, so now that the games itself can better feed the GPU, AMD now gets a nice performance boost Nvidia has been having all along.

Intel isn't the problem. Their CPUs have massive amounts of performance headroom that simply isn't being utilized. All the software that's run is absolute trash, you'd be amazed how much faster games would run if developers didn't code in ass-backwards circles.

Okay this is just a thought I have had, but it kinda makes sense that they would do this. Pascal right now is not the best thing ever, they seem to not be able to make the amount that they need to make and further more pascal does not have great async compute performance. Pascal also seems to be hot really hot, that is also a reason why we have seen the coolers getting better. They might have some problems with the production of the chips and I bet that Nvidia wants to get some HBM GPUs out fast, but since HBM2 is not really here in bulk, it would be hard to make a consumer card with it on. Also I think they are scared of Vega, with how they are seeing polaris performe in DX12 and in vulcan.

 

IMO Pascal feels like a filler gen, not what we have been led to believe. 

Pascal feels like a meh gen IMO and plus the fact that the pricing has gone up, I am not that happy about this gen.

 

So I think that they want to push out volta fast because of async compute, vulkan, maybe some problems in the manufacturing, the heat and because they are maybe scared by Vega.

 

This also means that I wont upgrade this gen to dual high end cards unless Vega is insanely good, I will maybe get a 1060 or 1070 or a low end Vega card, just to replace my 7950.

 

Remember this is just thoughts.

Pascal runs cooler not hotter from what I've heard and my own experience.  My Gigabyte G1 1070 runs cooler than my 970 ever did.

that is because the cooler is better. Did you know that the cooler on the ref cards has been upgraded, yet the 900 series ref cards with the worse cooler ran cooler, also the die is way smaller so the heat is way more concentrated also TDP =/= heat

I still don't understand why async compute is talked about like its a stand alone feature, like tessellation or anisotropic filtering. Saying that AMD does async compute better is like saying that someone with a sprained ankle uses crutches better. It's great that the new API's come with a set of crutches (figuratively speaking), but crapping on nvidia for not depending on the crutches and only adding token support in Pascal... smh o.O

How is the cooler better?  It's hard to tell with it installed but I don't think the heatsink looks any bigger and while the 1070 does have 3 fans vs. 2 on my old 970 the 3 fans are smaller.  

 

Didn't someone debunk the idea that a 3 fan cooler design was better?  Idk but I could've sworn I heard that somewhere too.  I think the G1 cooler looks nicer than my basic MSI 970 but idk for sure if it's better.  

 

Even if tdp is not a 1-1 measure of heat output it's still a gauge for relative heat output.  Pascal is supposed to have a slightly lower tdp than whatever the 970 gen was called isn't it?

 

 

I'm not trying to say you're flat out wrong so sorry if I give that impression.  Just trying to clarify the facts and learn something by asking questions.

more fans = better 8/10 times. Reason is that the more surface area you can cool, the more effective the cooling will be.

 

The new "Fanboy Edition" reference coolers contain a copper vapor-chamber. This transfers heat from the GPU to the heatpipes and into the heatsink MUCH more efficiently.

Didn't someone debunk the idea that a 3 fan cooler design was better?  Idk but I could've sworn I heard that somewhere too.  I think the G1 cooler looks nicer than my basic MSI 970 but idk for sure if it's better.  

 

Even if tdp is not a 1-1 measure of heat output it's still a gauge for relative heat output.  Pascal is supposed to have a slightly lower tdp than whatever the 970 gen was called isn't it?

well @Prysin already said it and I can add a little to it, the new coolers kinda look the same, but they are not the same when you "under the hood" the ref cooler now has a copper vapor-chamber. They used the old titan x (if I remember correctly) cooler on the 1080 and such and it is really struggling to keep them cool, the old titan x is what 250-300w TDP card yet it struggles to cool a 180w TDP card. I think the reason why we are seeing the FE card having it's own MSRP is because the cooler is more expensive to make. You should think of pascal as a smaller version of maxwell with a higher core clock, because that is what pascal is in many ways. Also you cannot really compare heat sinks just by looking at the card, you need to take the cooler off both cards and then start looking for differences between them.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

If the performance numbers meet or surpass, why is efficiency as big of an issue? Architecturally Vega is suppose to be different to Polaris. I'm also guessing the die will be bigger. It's still 14nm finfet but isn't that where their similarities end?

Because if AMD can't even match previous generation technologies, it won't make any headway in datacenters, a place it really needs to for financial security.

 

Also, I wouldn't bet their architectures are so different.

Don't trust all these kind of "leaks".

You gotta realize that those company have to "hype it up" before they produce any sort of products.

It is all part of the marketing scheme. To drive people to buy "best of the best" products. 

Just go buy what you need, and use it for as long as you can. Then you are golden.

 

Nvidia is working on Volta. It does not mean they are already mass producing them, does not mean they will release it any time soon.  

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
