NVIDIA Prepping High-Performance Volta GPU Lineup

Eh, that's how UK prices work. In the UK, it's more than 20% cheaper, so price to performance for the RX 480 is worse (Based on the percentages you gave me).

Depends. Under DX11 yes. Under DX12 or Vulkan no. Keep in mind also that with the 480 you get more than double the memory.

But the 480 is more money...

Why are you cherry picking the sales price on RX 480 vs GTX 970? Are you doing that on purpose or did you simply not do any research into pricing?

You're essentially pitting the most expensive RX 480 against the cheapest GTX 970.

Sapphire RX 480 - $209 GBP

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/sH2rxr/sapphire-radeon-rx-480-4gb-video-card-21260-01-20g

So, now we have a RX 480 that is ~7% more expensive, and provides greater than 10% increased performance over the 970.

I also found quite a few RX 480's under $230 GBP.

No, you get double the memory, and it's all full speed. The 970 still HAS 4GB VRAM, it's just that 0.5GB of that are slower.

That 0.5GB is useless and you know it. Also, from what I see above, the prices are much closer than what you listed therefore the 970 is actually worse value in every way possible

That's just the first RX 480 I saw on Overclockers, compared to a mid price 970. I happend to have OCUK in a different browser window, so that's what I used. I didn't do more than a minutes price research total.

If we're going to do this, £210 cheapest RX480, £188 for the cheapest 970.

EDIT: And I chose some rather good brands for the first prices...

So Sapphire is not a good brand? They are EVGA of AMD, they are THE BEST, that ref cooler is just not that good compared to none stock coolers, but that has nothing to do with the brand.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

It was included - yes, but you somehow accidentally found the most expensive RX480 (let alone the most expensive Sapphire card) listed.

Because OCUK are trying to make money. It's still an unfair comparison, comparing last to current gen cards.

Call it an unfair comparison if you want, but at least don't stack the deck w/ cherry picked results. As you've now seen, you can get several different RX 480's for significantly less then you were portraying. Now that we know the actual objective monetary differences, you can see that the RX 480 is a significantly better deal then you pointed out.

Is it the perfect deal? No. Not for everyone at least. But it's still a pretty good value, all told.

I was gonna say, from a business perspective, they would be fucking idiots to release Volta so soon, when half of Pascal is still in short supply. The only possible reason they would rush Volta out earlier, is if they're scared shitless of Vega, and think it will utterly destroy their lineup.

(Because we've seen in the past that even if the two companies are neck and neck technology and performance wise, NVIDIA has nothing to worry about. People still buy NVIDIA in droves, even when AMD offers the superior alternative at a specific price segment)

well if you think AMD offers such great things you go ahead man and keep buying the inferior products. Enjoy not being able to overclock amd gpus, because let me tell you i find it very enjoyable to overclock my graphics card +250mhz on core and like +500 on memory its a really cool aspect of nvidia cards being able to get 20% more performance out of a card by simply tuning.... where as amd cards LMFAO look at the new rx 480 oh hard crashes after 1300mhz thats nice! Good for you AMD maybe get some better engineers.

Interesting hostile post.

So lets clear something up first.

CLOCKSPEED MEANS JACKSHIT BY ITSELF.

Just because NVIDIA cards get +250MHz on core, in itself, doesn't mean a damn thing. We've seen this before with AMD vs Intel on the CPU side, back in the Athlon XP Days (Where a 2 GHz CPU was wiping the floor with a 3.2 GHZ+ CPU).

They have entirely different architectures. So you cannot compare the clockspeed without also comparing IPC and other factors. You can also still overclock AMD GPU's, it just varies how much headroom you get.

On a Fury X? Hardly any at all. On a HD7950? I can give that thing nearly 400MHz extra on the Core. Stop generalizing, and stop blindly following one brand or the other.

I don't "love" AMD. I also don't love NVIDIA also. I look at the products, and the business decisions of each company, and make an informed decision in each individual case.

Thats good i like that and i also look at both brands and choose just which is the better product i have absolutely NO interest in getting the inferior product because i dont wanna be ripped off. But really... Its a known fact im gonna say right now its not even a hidden thing anymore.... the reason why amd got destroyed by nvidia is apparent now after dx 12 came out. ITS APPARENT the devs finally came out and told everyone yeah amd loses on dx11 because their overhead is SO BAD ON DX11 like its terrible compared to nvidias drivers which are SO SO WELL optimized for dx11 that in dx 12 they gain so little because their cards are already perfected where as amds are NOT. SO yeah youre right im gonna buy nvidia because they CLEARLY do better also pascal can and does do async actually i saw a reddit post explaining it, its a different way of doing it not any worse or better just different and it works just as well as AMDs so overall i bought a gtx 1070 because really AMD at this point sucks at their dx 11 drivers they suck at overclocking they suck THE MOST at power draw. LMAO GTX 1070 POWER DRAW = RX 480 for half the performance. Great engineering amd you went to 14nm and thats what you pulled off... yeah were doomed to be a monopoly in the near future because people dont want to buy inferior products from amd that are lacking.

Don't think Nvidia would want to be a monopoly and risk antitrust lawsuits. And with intel integrated graphics, you could get some indirect competition.
