NVIDIA Prepping High-Performance Volta GPU Lineup

VagabondWraith

High performance, significantly revamped architecture
According to a translation of USG Ishimura's post, the performance of GV104 -- the Volta-based successor to the recently released GP104 chip (which powers the GeForce GTX 1070 and GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards) -- will offer "really strong" performance.

This performance enhancement, the user indicates, is due to the fact that the "SM structure [has] changed" relative to the prior-generation Pascal architecture (in NVIDIA's graphics architecture, "SM" is short for "streaming multiprocessor."

According to USG Ishimura, NVIDIA is actually planning not two, but three high-end gaming graphics processors based on Volta this time around: GV104, GV110, and GV102.

nVidia seems to be moving at lightning pace. After launching their "big dog" TITAN so early, I felt something was up their sleeve. Volta may be here much sooner than anticipated. Considering Pascal is what Maxwell was originally intended to be, it seems as a stopgap until Volta is ready, which looks like it may be soon. I am curious to see if they manage to implement Asynchronous Compute into Volta considering its a brand new architecture. The article states that the arch is revamped and not similar to the SM layout as generations before.

What do you guys think? Is this the "true" 4K Ultra card upon us? I'm interested to see the changes nVidia has brought with Volta.

It wont be soon at all. It makes no sense at all. They would undercut the 1080 and 1070. It will be 2H 2017.

So would I be fine with getting one Titan X, then the other in Spring?

I was gonna say, from a business perspective, they would be fucking idiots to release Volta so soon, when half of Pascal is still in short supply. The only possible reason they would rush Volta out earlier, is if they're scared shitless of Vega, and think it will utterly destroy their lineup.

(Because we've seen in the past that even if the two companies are neck and neck technology and performance wise, NVIDIA has nothing to worry about. People still buy NVIDIA in droves, even when AMD offers the superior alternative at a specific price segment)

Unless Vega is great, I doubt it. It could be that:

                                                          GPU TDP

Vega 11 XT => 1080                         (200 watt)

Vega 11 PRO => 1070                      (200 watt)

Vega 10 XT => Titan XP                   (275 watt)

Vega 11 Pro  => >Titan XP               (275 watt)

VEGA MUST BE MORE EFFICIENT THAN POLARIS!!! (polaris is less efficient than the 970)

 But be realistic, vega wont challenge anything. When has any AMD gpu in the last 5 years done anything to really challenge nvidia at the high end

Thats not a good thing, the 970 is 28 nm and is more efficient than an amd 14nm chip. They need to move away from GCN with VEGA, or Na'vi. Do a complete overhaul.

because it's cut-down hardware-wise and uses a different rasterization technique.

just gonna mention this: "working on them" doesnt even mean they'll have a "behind closed doors" sample within months, let alone have meaks about what it'll actually be like.

It still doesnt explain the fact that amd is still behind nvidia even AFTER a process jump.

Not necessarily - look at Vulkan. 480 is getting 60% better performance.

Elaborate.

You mean it's now 60% better than the similarly-priced, better-performing, 1060 in Vulkan? (lmao)

or 60% better performance than last gen's 380 in Vulkan?

They wouldn't be out for 10 months, this is the problem with this forum, people tell people "Oh wait for this" when no set date is for it and no details are out yet. Be happy with what you got, don't be all down on yourself in 3 months when something else is announced. Just be happy you have a 1070.

Many said that Nvidia with their huge market advantage and high end series GPU can get away with selling very expensive products, which allow them to invest TONS of money into R&D, which allows them to have better high end products than the competition, which allows them to get away with selling very expensive products while keeping market advantage.

Unless AMD can pull something off here, then it's already GG.
