so, what happened ?!

well, about a week ago, Consumer Reports did a water resistance testing on Galaxy S7, S7 Edge and two S7 Active phones - the phones have IP68 certification (dust proof and can survive under 30 minutes in 5 feet / 1.5m of water)

the non Active S7 survived the test, the two Active S7 did not

Consumer Reports technicians placed a Galaxy S7 Active in a water tank pressurized to 2.12 pounds-per-square-inch, the equivalent of just under five feet of water, and set a timer for 30 minutes. When we removed the phone, the screen was obscured by green lines, and tiny bubbles were visible in the lenses of the front- and rear-facing cameras. The touchscreen wasn’t responsive.

Following our standard procedure when a sample fails an immersion test, we submitted a second Galaxy S7 Active to the same test. That phone failed as well. After we removed it from the tank, the screen cycled on and off every few seconds, and moisture could be seen in the front and back camera lenses. We also noticed water in the slot holding the SIM card.

For a couple of days following the test, the screens of both phones would light up when the phones were plugged in, though the displays could not be read. The phones never returned to functionality.

 

could the two Galaxy S7 Active been defective in the 1st place? certainly possible - but where is Samsung's QA ?!

it's a ~800$ phone, or ~900$ unlocked :dry:

Things like this is why people shouldn't go past the S5. The S5 is to date the best Samsung phone (the Note is a phablet not a phone).

Seeing the 6 and 6S be just as waterproof as the s7 yet they don't advertise it as waterproof is the way to do it. You get idiots you push it too far then you get a bunch of backlash.

I guess we'll have to wait for a few more reviews and independent testers before we really get the full story. Could be two coincidentally bad phones; could be just a bad phone in general; could be a bad testing procedure (not that I personally think the latter is the case, but you gotta keep the possibilities open)

both the 6 and 6s are not waterproof in any way. I go through dozens of 6 - 6s' in my shop monthly from water damage. the 6 isn't at all and the 6s only has a sealant around the screen and home button, water can still pass from the bottom speaker and the earphone does have a sealant but its weak as hell. it is dust proof from the sealant though. that is why they dont advertise it at all.

They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

even the normal S7 under running water is not functioning

 

I saw this demo phone under running water and you can see internal water damage

 

camera has water condensation hence the discolouration.

 

Screen is flickering and home button is not working

My brother dropped his HTC wildfire into the birds water supply while playing music......it kept playing music while under water; no serious damage.

That's funny. Many considered, including me, the S5 as the worst flagship phone of 2014 because the camera sucked, the finger print sensor sucked, it ran hot and throttled, and in the age of premium build quality, it was still rocking a cheap, plastic construction.

Even if a phone is advertised as waterproof, at that kind of price I wouldn't have the guts to chance my arm like that. It's nice to have peace of mind knowing if you accidentally drop it in a bath or spill something on it that it won't break.

 

I wouldn't keep it in my pocket when I go swimming though, or expose it to water intentionally.

Yep, that looks like the same US model that my friend has and she hated it so much. The amount of problems she had drove her away from Android and Samsung.

Well, I've experienced no problems at all (its the Australian model). Its build quality matches the specs+price.
