RX 480 vs GTX 1060

GirlFromYonder
Go to solution Solved by alpenwasser,

Edited a few posts for aggressive language towards other users. Keep it fucking civil, folks. Thanks. :)

As of now the 1060 is rumored to be as fast as the 980 thus faster than the Rx480. As we know the cooler quality of the refernce cooler of rx 480 is SHIT thus it is cheaper to make. So what if when the benchmarks come out and the 1060 IS faster than the RX 480. AMD just drops its price and still remain the better card for the money.  AMD could have over priced there cards cause there was no competition as intel has (6950X)

What do u make of this?

While this is in no way confirmed , based on an educated guess , i think the 1060 should be around aftermarket 970 territory , not 980 .

One thing you should also consider is that the 1060 might turn out like other pascal card : unavailable and way higher than msrp . But we won't know until launch anyway .

Just my two cents.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Honestly we just have to wait and see. Only 7 days for the release of the gtx 1060.

Ah? the reference cooler for the RX 480 is not bad for a reference cooler, GTX 1060 will most likely cost 300+ on launch, I doubt that we will see 249 MSRP before 3 months of launch.

I doubt that AMD will reduce the price of the RX 480, unless for a miracle there will be really GTX 1060 for 249 and with GTX 980 performance.

Yeah that could happen, but nvidias claim on the 1080 was fairly correct so i am also expecting this one to be. But yeah, we can not be sure.

Not much to say until we can see reviews of aftermarket card for both of them.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

well i think it should be around 970 performance based on the specs of the card ( cuda cores , clocks and TFLOPS ). I can do this because pascal is essentially maxwell on 16nm finfet with a longer pipeline ( faster clocks , lower IPC ) . Then it all comes down to math

What do u make of this?

What do you care about? Direct X 11 or Direct X 12 And Vulkan? If it's former then buy the GTX 1060 and if it's the latter then buy the RX 480.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Only reason you'd pick a 480 over a 970 is if you need more Vram and DON'T need Cuda Cores. and the only time you'd choose the 1070 over the 980ti is if you need more Vram.

  1. 1080
  2. 980ti
  3. 1070
  4. 1060
  5. 980
  6. 970
  7. 480

RX 480 is cheaper, and is a lot faster on DX 12 , Vulkan, with same performance on DX 11.

480 benchmarks match the 970 and they are both currently $269 USD... Vulkan barely beats the 970. If you use Cuda Cores the 970 is a No Brainer.

If you fellate Nvidia's genitals then it is indeed a no brainer. Otherwise the RX 480 is a no brainer.

Love how he placed the 480 at the bottom of the list and completely ignored the other cards in the AMD lineup... Nvidia biased a little? Running a pair of 480's and loving it. The performance is great and well with the recent release of Vulkan in DooM the world is perfect =D

Do you even know what CUDA CORES are for? Not everything is about gaming... a large portion of the Linus Community is content creators, VFX artists, and 3D models. More Vram won't save you when it comes to rendering cuda core based software. If anything this shows how slow AMD is that they just now came out with rival for 970 thats in the same price range. I am aware of the 390 but even it was outperformed in NON-Gaming benchmarks by the 970.

You don't have to a fanboy to pick Nvidia... just know what your software needs to run optimal.

Yeah if we can stop being fans and get back to being enthusiasts that would be great...

Wait for the benchmarks and don't get fooled into following API trends, as they swing back and forth.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

No such thing as future proofing, especially not in lower end cards.

2 words: Cuda Cores... if all you want to do is game just get more Vram, but if you use your computer for ANYTHING that involves creation, you'll be better off getting Nvidia as Cuda cores outperforms more Vram in these applications.
