AMD or Intel processor for BF4 build (ultra)

The difference between an AMD 8350 and an Intel i7 3930k is only 7

AMD price as of this post on Newegg: $199.99

Intel price as of this post on Newegg: $569.99

Cost difference: $370

7 extra FPS is not worth $370.

And these are stock speeds. Plenty of people run an 8350 around 4.6Ghz.

If we ignore generation, brand loyalty, clock speeds and focus on value per dollar, there is no reason why you shouldn't get an 8350 and use the extra cash to invest in more power GPUs. That is what is going to be doing the bulk of the rendering anyway.

Sorry but those benchmark where out before the beta....This is the newest benchmarks. So AMD is not performing too well and the 4930k isn't there but the 4770k out performs AMD 8350 so just think how good the 4930k will be for bf4. Also to let you guys know that you need Windows 8 to get best performance.

My i5 2500K is still doing fine, haha. Only a 9FPS difference from the top. (4.4Ghz isn't that dramatic from 4.5Ghz...close enough!)

Thanks for posting this, though. The more up to date information, the better.

I have a FX 8350 at 4.6Ghz and a 3930k at 4.3 Ghz. The Intel is faster no doubt.

since no one has recommended an 8320 i have to from a pure/price to performance standpoint, i hit 4.8 on mine barely raising the stock voltage and just by bumping up the multiplier, they're incredible overclockers, you can get one for $145 now, and pair it with a gigabyte 970 ud3 or asus m5a97 your golden for a budget.

3770K/4770K!

don't buy amd cpus. They are weak comparing to i7s. Here, check this benchmarks:

EnxK4GD.jpg

As you see i7s outperform amd cpus

OMG you fanboy! the FX-8350 is $199, $120 cheaper than that i7 and look at that performance! and that's not even optimized or with Mantle yet!

Get the FX 8350 dude, it's a no brainer!

I would definatly not get a 8350, I have one now and im upgrading to a 4770k. Its a huuuuge bottleneck on my crossfire 7970s. On bf3 a friend with one 7970 gets better fps then me with a 3570k. Intell is so much better for gaming

have you enabled cf?

Well, just as I thought I had an answer a whole lot of points come up for the opposition. For whoever, I've already stated the budget for my CPU, the mobo should be around $150, it can go to 170, but 200 is a bit overkill. Anything less is good.

Someone I know wants to build a PC mainly for playing Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings. The budget doesn't really matter but please don't go overkill (suggest Intel Extremes). He would also like to save as much as possible. I am veering towards AMD because Mantle will supposedly make use of its 8 cores.

Which should I choose?

Simple Answer to this is wait for the Mantle benchmarks to be published and you will have your answer...

If you cant wait for the benchmarks?

Get an AMD processor...WHY? because as at the moment i would put that as a safe bet  ;)

why would you base any choice on benchmarks from a poorly optimized beta, I swear this fixation on benchmarks really pisses me off sometimes.

At what resolution and graphical settings did you test? And did you'll make sure they were identical on both machines?

I'm having no problems with the frames on the beta. I'm getting 120fps on 1080p. Do you have windows 8 installed?

1. I'm not playing BF4 nor do I have any intention to play it in the furture

2. I don't like Windows 8

I don't understand why some people are so hostile towards people who legitimately recommend AMD CPUs, you should be happy that competition is rising up in the CPU market.

An AMD FX 8320 or 8350 will perform extremely well in BF4, equivalent to the 4670K & the 4770K, however due to the significant price advantage to the AMD chips, I'll have to recommend them over the intel ones.

PCLAB.pl is EXTREMELY biased against AMD, I wouldn't trust any of their benchmarks.

GameGPU.ru proved to be extremely accurate over the years & their testing methods are bar none.

GameGPU also ranks processors based on the minimums & the averages, because minimum FPS is the most important, it tells how smooth or unstable the performance is.

Maximum FPS adds nothing to your gaming experience.

Depends on the GPU you want to pair it with currently. I5/i7 will do the best work in my opinion, just look at the current drivers for Radeon and GeForce:

It's a particularly big problem with Battlefield 4's beta but this has been case for years now, GeForce works better with slower multicore CPUs due to multithreaded drivers, while Radeon 7970 needs a quick single thread.

CPUs + AMD Radeon HD 7970:

CPUs + Nvidia GeForce GTX 770:

Just look at FX 83xx! With GTX 770, at stock clocks, it pulls 7 (!!!) FPS more  than OVERCLOCKED FX 83xx with Radeon 7970!

OVERCLOCKED FX 83xx with GTX 770 gets 17 (!!!) FPS more than OVERCLOCKED FX 83xx with Radeon 7970!

We'll have to wait for Mantle before answering your questions but right now:

If you go AMD, go Nvidia GPU.

If you go Intel, you can choose either AMD or Nvidia GPU.
