AMD or Intel processor for BF4 build (ultra)

Well thats what I mean GPU's arnt just used for gaming, though I know thats all most people think about here. I would also like to see how much bandwidth is say needed for a titan that is just maxed out doing GPGPU. Didnt they have a 780 in one of their rigs to do such?

No they aren't only used for gaming, but in this instance the original poster is using them for gaming, so I was providing information relevant to the situation to help him with his decision, to address someone else's advice that Intel is better for him because it has PCIe 3.0.

Either way it doesn't matter whether he uses Intel or AMD, even though AMD uses PCIe 2.0 they have twice as many lanes as Intel so the bandwidth is equal on both platforms anyway.

I am only replying in context of the original post, I'm not really trying to start a comprehensive max possible GPU bandwidth-usage discussion... That's a topic for a dedicated thread if you'd like.

to bad bf4 is optimized for amd and will be running the mantle api in december.

Mantle API benefits Intel and much as it benefits AMD, it allows more cores to be used more efficiently including the Intel 6 cores :P

Sure you can you just couldnt afford a graphics card then but who needs one of those anyway right?

Someone I know wants to build a PC mainly for playing Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings. The budget doesn't really matter but please don't go overkill (suggest Intel Extremes). He would also like to save as much as possible. I am veering towards AMD because Mantle will supposedly make use of its 8 cores.

Which should I choose?

If you don't want to overclock:

Xeon e3-1230v3 or 1240v3 (depending what money you can shell out).

i7 Haswell at price of i5 4670k. Add any mobo that fits your needs (do you want to use multi-gpu? need z87 with multiple PCie 3.0 x16 slots. if not, get some cheapo one for 70-100$ like MSI h87-g43).

][ CPU: Phenom II x6 1045t @3,7GHz ][ GPU: GTX 660 2GB ][ Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P ][ RAM: 8GB @1450Mhz CL9 DDR3 ][ PSU: Chieftec 500AB A ][ Case: SilentiumPC Regnum L50 ][ CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo & Arctic MX4 ][

Id like to speak from experience here, I dont know about mantle, but I have an 8350 with crossfire 7970s, in bf3 I had such a huge cpu bottleneck that my friend with a 3570k always had better fps than me when running a single 7970. I think mantle will help with the gpu but I dont know so much about the cpu. I am going to be upgrading to a 4770k here in the next week or so for bf4

I am all so looking at the fx-3850  for a new build but can.t decide on what motherboard as I never built a amd pc.

I hope I get some good tips from this post .

The only thing that really is holding me back is no amd motherboard support pci-e 3.0

I would go AMD because:

1) Op said its better to keep the costs lower if possible

2) BF4 is only in BETA(not really but...) and those benches arent accurate, wait for the real release

3) You will save tons of money(It was 370$ or so?). You could buy another GPU and get a lot more FPS instead of getting more powerful CPU and getting only few FPS more... And 8350 wasnt really made to compete with Intel extreme CPUs...

4) X79 Motherboards are also more expensive...

I'm gonna agree with Mixzzz on this one. He hit the point completely.

Intel 4770k@4.6GHz, ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero, Kingston HyperX Beast 2x8GB 2400MHz CL11, Gigabyte GTX 1070 Gaming, Kingston HyperX 3k 240GB - RAID0 (2x120Gb), 2xWD 1TB (Blue and Green), Corsair H100i, Corsair AX860, CoolerMaster HAF X, ASUS STRIX Tactic pro, Logitech G400S, HyperX Cloud II, Logitech X530, Acer Predator X34.

Yes they are but they are pretty expensive. I think.

Check out my rig in my signature. If you're looking to get something for the "future" of games, then you want a computer with 8 physical cores - not 4 cores with 8 threads. The truth of the matter is that PC rigs need to be comparable to consoles, considering most if not all the triple A titles are ported from consoles to the PC. Therefore, you'd want to get the bare minimum of the console specs.

If I were you, I would try to upgrade my CPU to the AMD FX 8350, get a clean OC of 4.5Ghz on there around 1.38-1.40v (depending LLC on your board, or board period), upgrade your RAM for cheap and grab yourself another 7950 and you'll have a BF4 beast PC.

I've seen multiple (in person) 7950's in crossfire overclocked that perform as well as 7970's in crossfire. Food for thought. ;)

The Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 is a popular choice.

Intel has PCIe 3.0 but only half as many lanes as AMD, so there is no difference in PCI Express bandwidth between the two platforms.

It's probably just me and my experiences, but I've been having issues as of late with Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 boards (went through 3). I've since switched to the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX REV 2.0; yes, it does only have PCI 2.0, but both lanes are 16x and don't see a difference from an old Intel PCI 3.0 system that I had prior.

I can't say enough about this new ASUS board - but in general, Gigabyte most times has solid boards that perform very well and for long periods of time.

Can't go wrong with the UD3 though, I've sold a computer to a customer with a UD3 setup, runs an 8120 @ 4.0Ghz with 16GB DDR3 RAM and two GTX 480's and is STILL performing triple A titles with respectable frames. :)

All in all, I guess it's luck of the draw. ;)

It usually is, for complex components like motherboard xD  But I've used the UD3 before, also without problems.
