I think AMD will launch a card with 1070 like performance very soon.

I was looking at the specs of the RX 480 and things seemed off. In theory it should be similar to a 1070 in performance, yet it's not. I then saw the slide showing that two in CF are competing with the 1080 at 50% utilization. Now obviously that doesn't mean that at 100% one would compete with a 1080. Without going too far in to detail, if you factor in the CF scaling with the performance of the two cards at 50% utilization, there should be potential for 20-30% more performance of a single card. Yet, there isn't. Why is this? It's actually something AMD has a history of doing. They launch cards with a single 6 pin first to keep the TDP lower, and market it off the amazing performance per watt. After a couple to a few months, they follow it up with a dual 6 pin card so that the GPU can be used to it's full potential. I'd imagine pretty soon they will have a card that's about 20-30% faster with a TDP of around 225 watts.

 

I'd go more into detail but I'm pretty sure to some here this is nothing and plenty of others have already thought of it. I could be completely wrong even, but I can't imagine they would make a card like this and only release a locked down version.

They have already said many times already, that are focusing on mainstream first. Yesterday they showed their full Polaris family on steam meaning Vega is for the 490 / fury and that isn't coming for months

Pretty much what this guy has said. Vega is the 1080, 1070 competitor and isn't going to be revealed until later this year, or early next year.

As said multiple times on this forum the RX 480 "should" perform somewhere in the 390 to 390x range. In some applications it might get close to the fury. But a 1070 trades blows with a 980ti, an overclocked 980ti. The 980ti beat everything AMD had to offer.

 

So while we don't know much for curtain about the RX 480, what we do know is it will not match a 1070.

Like the 2.5GHz on air rumors about the 1080? Hah, already AMD is backpedaling, the RX 480 gets a lower VR benchmark score than a 390. If it overclocked there's no way AMD would let that happen.

There are still few loopholes in their statement of full Polaris lineup. 2 chips and 3 cards. I have a hard time believing only 1 card will be based on 1 chip. If nothing else, I'm expecting at least a 450, the cut down version of 460 or something similar. Also there are few infos that the 480 is the cut down chip so maybe, who knows. I don't expect anything but I won't cross them as a possiblity. If nothing happens, cool, if they announce something, awesome.

 

Also note they say "The First".

Are you sure that test is legit? Also the 480 in other tests is better than 390X, not to mention the 1.4Ghz rumor for after market cards could easily be true!

That's what the marketing says, but AMD has worked to cause conflict between you and I by pushing that Nvidia is the enemy. AMD's open source is unfinished software, while Nvidia made their finished software open source. Where's the coverage of that? Nvidia isn't innocent, not by a mile. But they aren't the demon AMD would have you think, AMD is not the Hero they tell you they are, and you and I are not enemies because of our choice in graphics card manufacturers. And that choice is not something AMD has the right to take, just like it's not Nvidia's.

 

Right now, at this moment. AMD is more of a threat to gaming than Nvidia. Will people identify that, as they did Nvidia and Hairworks? Or ignore the signs, because of brand loyalty and create the next Gameworks?

Yeah. The hope was that their definition of "mainstream" meant "everything up to but not including Fury". In other words, it would include the 490. But it clearly doesn't. Nvidia are going to go completely without competition this generation, until Vega.

 

The worrying thing is that around that time people are expecting GP 102 to appear. So just in time for AMD to finally release a competitor to the GTX 1070, Nvidia will be releasing a 1080 Ti. And all of this could happen as soon as July, or as late as a year from now. Or even never. Maybe the reason for Pascal's ridiculous pricing is that there isn't going to be a consumer Big Pascal this time around because AMD are only competing up to the GTX 1060. No one has a clue.

Nvidia are also making GameWorks open source. FreeSync doesn't have a module, but it would appear that that module gives G-Sync a much greater versatility and range of acceptable framerates due its buffer which freesync is lacking. I don't really see a lack of CF bridges as being a positive or negative thing either. By all accounts it is the SLI bridge that is responsible for microstuttering having been eliminated completely for years now on dual GPU, while it still plagues crossfire. If AMD are able to get around this without a bridge, then woot. If Nvidia think it makes sense to keep the bridge, also woot. It doesn't bother me if cards are connected via a bridge or not as long as it works. And "no Hair Works", I'm sorry have you already forgotten TressFX and the hefty performance hit that came with? Or is it only "innovation" when AMD does it?

This is what I think is happening with the whole GPU scene atm:
I am more than sure both AMD and Nvidia know a lot about what each other companies are working on and what they are producing.

 

AMD knows they are going to be the provider for the Xbox Scorp / PS4.5 Neo as well as the GPUs in the new line of Mac products, so with a lot of their production focused on those choosing what to release is probably very important so they all don't get left behind. It makes sense to focus on the largest market in the PC space with the lower end cards if they can supply chips for consoles without being super costly, along side this they must have known that Nvidia have lots of power in Pascal and they we not ready with HBM2 to pump out a Fury / 490.

Nvidia on the other hand knowing that AMD is going to have their hands full with Consoles and macs and most likely knowing AMD is going to be able to provide good performing chips at a low price focused on the high end market to start, knowing that AMD have nothing in sight to compete they ramped up the price by £$100 and called it a day
 

After a couple of months AMD will have the console and Mac chips under fine production and will work on getting HBM2 out with Vega to compete with the 1080 whilst Nvidia release the 1060 after soaking up that sweet 1070 and 1080 money, do a price drop to match AMD and all with be boring in the GPU scene again, a card at every price point with a near linear performance increase.

But this is what I think, whilst it may be wrong, it makes the most sense for me as to what is currently happening
