Is it weird that I take my shirt off when working on computers?

If you're grounded with a wrist strap, no it's not necessary. However, just because you're using a wrist strap that's connected to a grounded object doesn't mean you're grounded. You still need to conduct static electricity from your wrist over to the wrist strap itself. If you suffer from dry skin, your body may have too much resistance for the strap to be useful.

So oil yourself up first?

Clothing is an insulator, and therefore develops static electricity. This is why when I'm at work, we have to wear ESD jackets.

With certain lotions, yes. The lotion must have conductive materials in it, otherwise it will do nothing to make the wrist strap functional. At work, I use ESD lotion as my skin gets very dry due to use of soap and other factors, and as a result, my wrist strap will fail to make a ground connection to the test device we use(yup, we test our straps to make sure they work, and ESD certified devices must get recertification after a certain period).

Components give off radiation and that's not good for you. You give off static electricity and that's not good for your components. The clothes you wear, which is like a barrier between you and your components won't do, so to fix this problem, you'll need to get a full on anti-static suit. Of course they're expensive, but you and make a DIY version of it for cheap. Notice how your components like motherboard, hard drive, SSD, and video card comes in those shiny bags (some are clear and they have grid lines on it), that's what you need, so gather as much as you can. Not enough, then go to your local PC shop to see if they have.  When you have enough, you're going to make a suit out of it. Next time, when it's time to do a build, you will be prepared. Just strip naked, wear that a DIY anti-static suit, you've proudly made.

Never heard of the radiation part. I'm sure it's nothing harmful though. Is this just when components are powered on, or do they emit radiation when off as well?

random question but do you think it is possible to build up enough static from the electrical energy in our nerves?

I'm just one of those people that want to be 100% sure I wont damage any of my components in the slightest. I know that going shirtless isn't totally necessary, but I'm sure it helps. I just don't want any clothing getting near my PC. So anyways, am I the only one that does this?

And yes, I do use a wrist strap :D

Come work on my computer... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
