AMD Zen CPUs will have PGA mounting systems

Me thinks your being ripped off severely mate...

You buy an unlocked processor and put it in a 100$ mobo with a shitty power delivery, and no bluetooth/wifi capacity? Using a shit mobo with a high-end processor is like using some cheap-ass $30 power supply.

it's a LGA Celeron clocking over the 8Ghz mark... ;)

1 core, 1 thread, WOW. That's like running a Toyota crap car on 1 piston.

The dearest mobo here in Aus is worth $670USD, if by some chance your mobo is worth more than your CPU, your being ripped off, not poking a stick at ya, just meerly pointing it out...

And I still think it's hilarious :D, there are i7 results similar but no one does overclocking like AMD, I doubt at the voltages used in the CPU application that pins are a benefit there, but a cost cut. But needless to say, AMD would benefit from LGA...

Well I don't really care about LN2 overclocks on single cores. If I can't benefit from it, I don't see the point. My 4790k is a shit sample, so I don't OC it. No reason to OC it 5% (4.6GHZ) only to have it be unstable.

I don't think there is any technical benefit to LGA. Many of the extra pins on Intel might simply be for voltage, as the pins cannot handle as much in the socket. So more might be less or the same as a PGA with fewer pins.

You'll probably find (especially with the 2011-3) that the extra pins are for the large amount of PCI lanes, but I am not familiar with much AMD tech, so don't take this as "intel has more pci lanes than AMD''...

You should be able to get a way higher (and stable) clock on your 4790k? May I ask what mobo it's on?

Asus Z97 Ranger. Not the best board, but by no means the worst either. Problem is, that for it to even go to 4.6, it needs a fairly high voltage. Above 1.3. That adds at least 10c to the temps for a 5% OC. just not worth it to me.

That's just unheard of down here... Maybe your cooling solution is crud?

PGA again, that would be awesome! :D.

Intel fans try to find anything to talk down an AMD product that has not even launched.

Without having a single clue what they exaly talk about.

Its funny realy.

But also sad at the same time.

It is, it's a shitty Cooler Master Seidon 120v2 AIO. Going to go for a Corsair one instead, but I can't fit a 240 in my pc... and I don't want to shell out 800+ DKK for one of the high end ones either.

Please try to find some loss change for better fans and maybe some new poo (thermal compound) as well... You'll like the results. :)

The fan they use sucks, as it seems to move air to the sides, so there's little airflow through the radiator. I have some Venturi pressure fans, but the pressure fans from Corsair should be good enough though.

you do realize that you can overclock better on PGA then LGA?

PGA capable at much higher voltages and power draws then LGA. The limiting factor for PGA sockets, in terms of wattages, is actually the perforated plastic used in the socket. Said plastic can rarely tolerate more then 70 c before it starts to melt. But by just using a fiberglass composite or heat resistant thermoplastic you can easily exert FAR more power through a PGA socket.

This isn't true, and even if it was, it makes no difference to anyone because no one is going to be pushing enough current through their socket to get it hot enough to melt the socket.

The power is dissipated through the heat spreader and the cooler, not the socket.

I'd be surprised if the socket ever gets above 70C even on extreme suicide overclock runs.

i wouldn't be surprised if its not even a zen chip, not very hard to change a heat-spreader.

They could get sued if they do something like that though.... And I don't think AMD would want to get involved with legal stuff since they are kinda low on money.....

What's wrong with PGA? Personally I much prefer that.

True.

I personally believe Zen will still be PGA at launch, but who knows.... Maybe I'm wrong!

That is a possibility, as Zen could be both PGA or LGA like FX and Opteron are. However, we do know that consumer Zen and AM4 will be PGA because of that HP OEM board that was found.

That's really dumb, not only would they need to design an entirely new socket but they would have to waste more money on a stupid idea like that for no benefit at all.

sigh, i was hoping it wouldn't be.

Is there any real advantage to PGA over LGA?

Or vice versa: is there any real advantage to LGA over PGA?

Since Zen is sampling very soon (within weeks), there is no reason to believe the chip shown at Computex was a prop.

much easier to bend a pin on a CPU since you are trying to place a chip with pins into holes vs placing a flat surface on pins.
