Tesla Autopilot is NOT self driving, it is an automated driving assist, not a complete driving system, it basically just follows the white lines on the road and uses automatic breaking, if it loses the road it will just crash

They are only saying it can selfdrive on a highway. 

 

It can do streets too but i guess the technology and law are not ready for it yet and deriver's attention is required. Too much going on in busy streets.

 

We are far from giving AI a 100% trust with something that can lead to fatal injuries.

Okay, Question is would he get a ticket? or does he deserve a ticket for this behavior? is this technically speaking "Legal" in terms of driver awareness to the road & others? , not sure if safety is 100% foolproof in this situation , what do you think?

Its not legal because the tesla is not a self driving car >< as I have now said like 12 times ahha

I´m not sure whether thats awesome or scary. But that´s pretty much the best advertisement a company like Tesla could get.

It's not that stupid. If the car loses markings it instantly switches to following surrounding cars.

its still not a good enough system that you can just sit in the back of the car and trust it to do everything

in fact just a quick google search will reveal quite a few incidents due to autopilot and idiot drivers trusting it maybe a little too much

its not a "driverless" car, its an automated driving assistant and nothing more

Definitely not good from a legal standpoint. More ammo for people to argue against their automation technology, as people can fall asleep easier at the wheel. May not crash, but still something they can use.

He's not really saying it's a driverless car (the assisted driving mode has a load of requirements in order to be used), but is just stating that the car isn't just suddenly going to swerve as soon as markings disappear. 

 

Definitely not safe to just trust the car to do everything, and it's not intended to be used that way, but it is reasonably safe at avoiding collisions if the conditions are not optimal.

Agreed on it being negligent and stupid. 

Assisted steering requires you to put your hands on the steering wheel at set intervals I believe, otherwise it slows the car down (eventually to a stop) and beeps like crazy until you do it. There are systems in place to prevent what is in this video, so maybe he literally only just fell asleep, or is just resting (still not safe, obviously).

yeah exactly

 

here is just one quick basic example of it losing the road, if he was asleep its likely he could have gone off the road

 

and another where it tries to swerve into another car

 

 

 

 

I know this is not on the motorway, so it shouldnt be used

but if somebody was dumb enough to try it, or was asleep, it would be a BAD idea

Tbf, both of those videos are cherry picked examples. It's the autopilot failing in areas it wasn't designed to work in. 

Not that it makes it any safer to sleep at the wheel, I'm certain that the autopilot has its moments out on the highway as well.

yeah I know they were, but there are a lot out there, and if this guy is dumb enough to sleep in it, he is surely dumb enough to use it in the wrong areas too

All I was trying to highlight is that its NOT a driverless car, and its merely automatic lane steering assist mixed with TACC  and you cant just leave it

There's videos of Teslas swerving over double yellow lines because they don't pick them up properly.

Definitely not a driverless car. The systems won't activate if you're out of the driver's seat (still videos of people sitting in the passenger seat with a weight in the driver's seat, though). Unfortunately, not everyone can be trusted in vehicles, seems even less so with vehicles with these sorts of driver assists.

With that said, I'm reluctant to say the video doesn't surprise me at all.

No I honesty am being truthful. I mean it is in start and stop traffic which a BMW can do the same. If it was going down a freeway that would be a lot worse as if the lines change the car can get screwed up and drive off the road

It's funny because it's actually very hard to fall asleep with Autopilot since it keeps warning you to grip the wheel quite firmly, something you're not doing when you sleep. If you don't do that the car will start screaming at you with all sorts of alarms and eventually just disconnect the Autopilot all together.
