Hopefully it's for the older hawaii skews as well. They probably only mentioned the 390 series to keep it short.

 

On the other hand, it COULD be specific to cards with the amount and type of vram used in 390 series cards. Without more technical information we can't point fingers.

No, it should not have DX. Nothing should use DX anymore. DX is a closed standard that locks you in to Windows, and only some versions of windows at that. The only reason it was tolerated up to now is that OpenGL wasn't as powerful. Vulkan takes care of that. The sooner DX dies out, the better for everyone. ID has always sided with the open standard if possible and it's nice to see their acquisition from Bethesda hasn't changed that yet. Vulkan will be a thing in DooM, no point in complaining about opengl.

DX11 doesn't guarantee performance at all despite what you say. It depends how good the implementation is. With their vulkan renderer being far along they would need a compelling reason to add another DX11 renderer for their pc version.

 

with Vulkan and DX12 as well good performance is not guaranteed. It depends on the quality of your implementations. APIs don't do any magic.

OpenGL 4.3-4.5 is every bit as powerful as DX 11. Where do you people get this crap? This game actually proves it!

from what I know there are things you can do in dx that you can't do (at least not as easily) in opengl, and then there are performance concerns. Id tech simply never used these functions (and that doesn't mean it doesn't look great) but others have.

no doubt that openGL is powerful and well featured...

the complaints I normally see from devs sound like.

-too many ways to do the same thing and not clear which way is best

-driver behaviour is inconsistent across IHVs

- vagueness of documentation sometimes leading to the above

-AMD has neglected the openGL ecosystem

-nvidia has pushed Nvidia specific stuff to devs and now lots of code is less portable as a result or won't perform well on others

 

can't vouch for any of the above personally (not an openGL dev) but that's what I see repeatedly from devs.

then again. They are working with Bethesda. Who are so open about things they will leave critical bugs open forever. Causing their software to BSOD left and right unless you are playing the game at the right time of day during a particular month with a specific weather condition outside. Oh and at least 3 stars and a planet must align too.

Different devs. Bethesda has a say in what platforms they support and when the game is released, how they develop and support it from there is usually up to the individual studio.

Whilst that is true, it is Bethesda we are talking about. If they can fuck it up, they will. Hell they nearly fucked their entire community, and they still havent given up on that idea yet.

Each way is very clear. The optimization guide for OpenGL is both verbose and precise. Devs complaining about that are nuts.

And in the end I was right when I said AMD will receive a huge boost with new drivers, same as we've seen many times, including W:TNO which, shockingly, is from the same company. And I'm more than sure that other older cards received quite a boost as well.

Yeah, but the issue was that it seems the performance was only for the 390(X) series... not all the AMD processors

it probably increased by 35 percent on only the 390 series and has varying degrees of improvements on the other cards

just goes to show how poor the devs are and how much they still rely on the hardware vendors to fix the broken shader code

 

like the Forza, was it? That got like 50%+ boost on Fiji GPUs from shader code fixes

For anyone still wondering why the 390 was specified only needs to look to the benchmark graphs that was linked in the OP and see the 380x beating the 390s.

Apparently the X90(x) chips aren't the best for many Open source API and drivers and need special drivers, were the X80s and new Furys don't have that problem.
