Too old for gamming ?

So, Anyone else in here has the same feeling with me ?
I used to love video games when i was a kid, but now I have a part-time job with good salary to pay for my school and other fees, and i have more than enough money to buy games and a PC, capable of running heavy game for at least 5 years from now, time is limited and my girlfriend wants me to spend all the time with her, but I still have some time for games.
i've heard about GTX 1080p and 1070p but I haven't felt exciting about PC or upcoming games since.... i don't know.... since I graduated from high school.
So, do you think that my life (school, job, GF,..)  has made me become ... uninterested in games and new PC hardware, or I'm simply just "too old for gaming"?

GTX 1080 and GTX 1070* (there is no p)

 

It's all up to you, we can't say if you've become uninterested in games/pc hardware, only you can.

I used to play minecraft 8 hours every night for 5 years. When I finally built my own PC I played everything I always wanted to and now a year later. I barely play games as I am more interested in programming, networking, and video editing. Don't get me wrong I love playing games. Playing GTA V has made laugh harder then anything else. I just don't have the time I guess

I'm still in secondary/high school but I find myself playing less and less since 2014, probably has something to do with my getting bored of everything quickly and haven't found a new game that interests me big time :P. I've got around 200 hours in GTA with 100 in R6S and almost 1100hrs in CS but I'm slowly finding them not very interesting anymore :( (actually, I probably can easily get 1000+ hours in R6S but it doesn't work on a friends computer so we stopped playing it...)

I was in the same boat until I got a Vive. Let me tell you. Even the simplest things are crazy. There was this demo were you are just at a camp site and you can walk around and cook stuff and you can also just listen to the crickets and watch the stars. I thought hey it's free maybe 30 minutes or so. I was there for 4 and a half hours. Time in VR does not exist. I put the headset on and it was bright outside and when I took it off it was dark and everyone was asleep. I truly got lost in a virtual world. I just can't play 2D games now they are too flat.

I usually don't play much currently . I spend a lot of time on the internet , but not much gaming . However , when i find a game i like , i binge it for days straight until i complete it ( last one was hitman absolution a few weeks ago )

I tend to dip in and out of different interests and hobbies. Recently I've been looking towards DIY speaker/amplifier builds... once I start down that path it will no doubt consume a far bit of time and energy. But, I always come back to games eventually. I'm in my (late) 30s, full-time job, married, mortgage etc. I guess it was a different thing when we were just getting together, but after 15 years, it's vital that we have some interests that overlap (movies / music / cooking) and some that absolutely do not*.

 

It's perfectly natural to have a shift in priorities / hobbies. The good thing is, they will still be there if/when you rediscover them.

 

* our collective sanity demands it, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Everyone needs their own space.

Nah I'm 27 and enjoy games I now people in there 40s who play games, (been playing a ton of dragons dogma and metro latly) but for me it's just something I enjoy I coil care less about gaming controversies or fanboys or the latest gaming hardware (even though I'm into it and plan on making it a profession).

 

Video games aren't just for teens anymore sure interest will wax and Wane but that's with every hobby.

Gaming is a hobby so you should treat it as such. The golden ages for gaming is from 14-30 imo. By your mid 20's, multiplayer fps games become dull and your tastes change (at least they did for me). At this point you're either done for good or become casual.

 

If it's "me" time you're concerned about then grow a pair and tell your girl that. Time management and priorities, bro. It's not that hard!

I found myself not quite into gaming these years.

I get bored too.

I always felt that gaming alone can be quite lonely sometimes, you need to play with your friends in order to "enjoy" a game.

All the skyping, chit chatting, even shit talking to each other was the core experience, that was the real fun part about gaming.

 

Nowadays I find myself very hard to concentrate while I game. 

Always thinking about other things, like family, job, and my study and other stuff.

I do not know any other ppl experience the same thing before.

And sometimes I find reading can make me focus more, not reflecting the past, nor worrying about the future.

 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Or find a girl that reads a book while you game :P I got super lucky.

 

What games have you found interesting? I really like FPS/RPG-type games (BioShock, GTAV, Skyrim, Fable) but it's mostly because of the stories and storytelling in those games more than the typical canned first-person-military-shooter 'ally runs.' That's what keeps me into those games, not so much the gameplay. Right now Skyrim is the only game I'm really spending time playing. There's so much content I haven't even begun to touch that I don't think I'll ever finish. Rocket League is fun from time to time, but it's a lot better when you have some friends over. There aren't many recent new releases that really interest me. You would think The Division or Fallout 4 would interest me, but they don't for some reason. Star Citizen and No Man's Sky are the two I'm looking forward to most now. I need to get Stellaris and give that a shot. I know my interests change with the seasons; now that it's warming up I pretty much abandon gaming for the most part. Once fall rolls around I start gaming again.

i'm not old by any stretch of the imagination, but i could already sum up a few things that "i liked as a kid" but now prefer differently or not at all.

 

my dad's well into the "balding" age, and is very much into the micromanagement style games (tycoon games, civ style games, etc.)

You just have to find the games that EXCITE you, and not look for being happy. (The exciting part ends up bringing more happiness and less boredom than just trying to search only for happy.)

 

For me that is still after all this time huge sprawling rpgs.

 

Then again, I read epic fantasy most of the time (or epic historical fiction.)

I don't think it's a age thing, more like life getting in the way.

 

I'm 28 and I've noticed games these days don't seem to keep my attention. Don't get me wrong I still love playing games, but I can't remember the last time I beat a game. Just like you I have priorities from spending time with family/friends/GF, walking my pug, riding my motorcycle, tuning my car, photography and resting after work. Gaming has definitely taken the back burner. Actually I recently started using Twitch a lot more these days. I rather watch people play games at the moment especially after a hard days work. Even though I have a High Endish rig I mostly use it for bills,emails,surfing the net and lastly gaming lol. But I do love building them.

If you're not excited by new games, play old ones and just play the new shit that excites you as it comes out. No one has possibly had the time to play all the amazing games of the last 20 years. I play more old games than new ones, but that's mostly because it's easier to find great games over a span of 20 years than it is to find them in only the current year.

It happens.  I used to stay up and do all nighters with friends and by myself.  I'd play games until I saw the sun through the blinds.  But now I can barely struggle to stay awake until 1 AM, and I'm about to turn 21...

I'm getting ready to go to MSU, I have a full time job, I have bills, I have a cat to take care of.  As much as I want to shoot the breeze and play games, I always can't.  I'm on the internet alot, but usually helping people or researching something.  Spare time I have, I spend a little of it with my family then if any left over I play games.

It's just life catching up, that's all.  I haven't lost a passion for gaming, I love it more than ever.  I built my own gaming PC over Christmas and I got a new shiny gaming laptop for college.  It's just more important things take up your time.  I still get in at least 2-4 hours of gaming a week, and I have a nice backlog of games to buy I'm just waiting for Steam summer sales to get.

Heh, I'm glad I'm not the only one with the same feelings as the OP.

 

I was into games since the Intellivision and the Vic20. Then came the mighty Commodore 64 through high school, then the first xt/AT IBM machines in post secondary, then I really got into gaming with the p200/Quake 2 days, spending a lot of time online.  Once Rainbow 6 came along, it was easily the hobby I spent the most time with.  Ran one of the largest sim gaming sites, easily in the world in the late 90s to 2001 or so, got all the new games and hardware free for review, and it was a great side job.

 

Then 9/11 happened, and my career/full time job got kicked into overdrive, and after 9 years or so of not really having the time or inclination for gaming, I retired on disability at 37 in 2010.  Got back into gaming since I have a lot of spare time, ie all of it now. No kids, no more wife, you would think it would be the ideal situation for a person with enough $ till the end of days, to get into gaming now that the net is so much better, as is the tech/games.  So I've built a few great systems since 2010, the last one a 6700k/980ti SLI system when I upgraded my x79 4930k system.  2 ROG Swift 27", and now the 34" Rog Swift.  Waiting for Broadwell E and 1080x2 like many others.  DXRacer chair, great DAC audio, TrackIR, waiting on the Rift and Vive.

 

Still, my nephews/niece use my systems more than I do, and they only come by a day a week and on Sundays usually.  It's odd, I really spend more time just looking at my gaming stuff than using it.  It's just lost its appeal in some ways I guess, I almost have to force myself to use/play my PCs, and I find myself reading a lot more instead.  That or watching the hundreds of Netflix TV shows out there - there isn't enough hours in the day to keep up with entertaining myself now, so many programs, movies, and of course games.  I know, lame huh, I just can't figure it out.  Maybe my reward center in the noodle is all fucked up from PTSD that's not diagnosed, but I otherwise feel fine, not unhappy, or anything like that at all.  I just keep buying new stuff, and not really using it.  Plus I sub to a few games that are 15$ USD a month, and only spend maybe an hour or two a month here and there on them.  Nostalgia maybe, I've been playing one since 1999.  Maybe it's nostalgia for the entire PC gaming thing...

 

I really hope the appeal and fun comes back.
