Just wait for the 1080 to come, then buy it. I honestly don't think 1080 ti will be coming THAT soon.

2 question:
1. Are you playing on 1080p or higher? If 1080p, dont bother
2. Are you satisfied with your current card performance? if yes, dont bother

Also whenever you ask question like this, there's always a newer card waiting after whatever you want to wait for. Like if you wait until Ti come out, 1170 and 1180 may have already have some rumor, or new AMD card. So again, ask yourself the 2 question I mention, and you will know if you should upgrade or not.

Wait to 2017, then AMD has a card that will make 1080 prices drop! :D

If you are going to wait for the Ti's I suggest waiting  on Polaris aswell just because to drop that kind of cash, team red may bring something decent to  the table this time. Many people who recently bought 9xx serries cards are selling to get pascal.

Get a 1080 after selling your 980 and wait and see if poolaris is decent compared to the Ti

The 1080 is already misterious enough as it is, don't make things even harder.

My monitor is 1080p60, but I'm currently gaming at 720p or even 600p due to my iGPU and wanting to keep my FPS from dropping below 60 in Source engine games.  I saw what @Megazero said, but I'm playing below 1080p.  (Some games I'd like to play I only get like 15fps, so I need an upgrade from my HD Graphics 4600.)

I plan to get the GTX 1070 soon after it comes out, hopefully an EVGA SC version.  I likely will keep it for at least a few years, possibly until it struggles to run then-current games at 600p or 720p at 15-20fps at low settings. :)

Eventually I plan to also get a 4K monitor after the prices for higher quality ones come down to a reasonable level.  (I paid about $250 for my 1080p monitor about 17 months ago, which I believe is a pretty good one, not one of the cheap / bargain bin models.)

A GP100 1080Ti is bare minimum 14 months away, and probably a few more months than that. GP100 doesn't even start being sold to HPC buyers for 8 more months, so I doubt we even see a GP100 Titan for 10-12 months. Then add 6 more months before yields are good enough for them to cut down the Titan into a 1080Ti for maybe $750 instead of the $1100-$1200 the Titan will go for (considering the Founders Edition premium Nvidia is putting on the 1070 and 1080 and considering Nvidia only ever put one model of Titan on the market, the reference one).

Just buy a 1080 and sell it in Q1 2017 for not much lost value and get a better card then, 1080 ti or AMD vega

1080 Ti can only be released when HBM2 is widely available, which won't be until Q1 2017
