When will we see better VR headsets?

I had planned on getting a VR headset but the main gripe I had been hearing in review was the resolution and how it isn't good enough for professional work like video editing, programming, etc. I am wondering because I want to wait till they come out with something that had more along the lines of dual 4K screens at 120fps or higher for better fidelity and so forth. I plan to get at least one GTX 1080 (ti) so don't say something like "No one can run that" or "The performance isn't there". I also was hoping to wait till the next Vive came out because I really like the movement. I also was hoping to wait till they had something like Tobii eye tracking for more functionality and Gsync for better frame quality. Thoughts on when the next generation will come out? Will it be like consoles (long time) or like graphics cards (once a year)?

 

Have you heard the info on the new performance of the 1080 and 1070? I know this won't happen in the next year or so but when will it happen?

But... noone CAN run that, the performance isn't there. What, you think Nvidia's new GPU will suddenly be able to run 8K at 120fps when the 980TI can't to 4K above 30 (no it can't, not at high settings and modern titels)?

 

Mate, dual 4K at 120fps at high settings is still a LONG way away.

I think he means more so when it would happen rather than if it'll happen now.

OP, 2160p at 120FPS is only feasible in older games, and even then, something like CSGO.

I wouldn't say a 'long' way away. with the technology generally advancing at a somewhat exponential rate and looking at Nvidia's roadmap, i do not think it is too far off at all.

Imagine instead of buying 3-6 monitors to display everything your working on, buying one VR headset and using Virtual Desktop. I know virtual desktop doesn't have that complete functionality yet but we are talking about the next few years.

A bit of maths. Today consoles can do 1080p@30 if we are lucky on a modern game (often they drop frames or are below 1080p). Given that we need 3x the frame rate and 4x the resolution to get to 4k@90, that is 12x the performance. We have 2-3x available on PC today but we still need 3-4 doublings of performance before we get to the point where today's games are possible in 4k VR.

 

If the silicon industry can keep it up then maybe we get a doubling every 24 months, so we can look forward to that in 6 years. Its not a limitation of the HMDs, we can make the 4k screens and we can make them run at 90hz, what we can't do is get a computer to render 3D graphics that fast without dramatically decreasing the graphical quality. Once it goes below a certain threshold its just not very compelling or real enough looking.

 

AMD is working on a VR HMD prototype with 4k screens and it should be possible to use such a thing for a 3D world with desktops projected into 2D, but it wouldn't be any good for games  on todays hardware. Maybe the 2D projected into 3D working era can begin with such a headset but being blinded especially from your hands and keyboard is a big problem from a working perspective for a lot of people. Decidedly niche, its gaming that is driving the VR sales today.

Nvidia just introduced "Simultaneous Multi Projection"  which instead of rendering two images (one for each eye/display) it renders one image. That's the most simplistic version of what's going on. There's lot more to it. Meaning we could reach almost a double the fps for VR compared to what we get now. 

 

There could be some insane improvement next year, all depends on a lucky accident (many great things happens due to an accident).

 

Why u need 120fps for programming and editing ???

 

Give it 2 more generations for VR and GPUs and u will get your dual 4k VR experience. 

 

Nobody but HTC and Oculus knows what they are working on now  

They could start teasing some plans for next gen next year.

Graphic cards and their ports are a long way from dual-4K at 90hz.

 

I think the next logical step would be to up the resolution from 1080x1200 to something in bounds of HDMI 2.0 spec like 1440x1600 per eye while keeping the refresh rate. That would be roughly 78% of 4K60HZ bandwidth.

 

This would be a very noticeable improvement (77%) and I would buy it (I already have the Vive).

 

I don't think there is going to be a large enough market for anything beyond that in the next few years.

I expect to see the next generation of HMDs late 2017.

There'll still be a little ways to go for single card 4K gaming whether or not there is a 1080ti or not. I doubt the Pascal Titan will be quite at that level either.

It's ok for gaming, but If you want to browse the web or do actual work (like coding) it is quite a bit too low for my taste.

Why the hell would you do that with VR though? I mean I suppose if you were an early bird content creator who wants to do something with VR for like a movie or something I could see the need for higher resolution and better color accuracy being important an HMD much like for a regular monitor.  Though those are specific cases unrelated to the mainstream use of HMDs for gaming.

What are you smoking. The res is perfectly fine. It can be better but christ you need to talk to Cray to make you a custom super computer to run anything higher res. Maybe 4 years or so. But it all depends on moores law and the battle with physics currently happening

I could sit on my couch with just the HMD and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and scale the screen(s) to my gusto. I could be on a nice sunny beach with screens floating around.
