Scrapyard Wars Season 4 - With Special Guest BS Mods

Great season but $900 is too much headroom for a scrapyard PC build. I've seen budget race cars built for a $1,000.

 

$150 seems reasonable but that would result in another Q6600/DDR2 battle.

 

Best average FPS at 1440p for $500?

Something VERY close to it looks like the Linkworld 431-06 C.2828 Silver

 

Something less G5 but still very sleek and industrial is a Voodoo Omen chassis. You take your time, you can kick every ass up and down the street with a Voodoo Omen build. Hard to find though -- and you will be PAYING for an Omen in good shape.

I appreciate the info, I'll try to find the coolermaster as that venom is gorgeous but crazy price. Or I might just try to find someone to install a atx motherboard tray in a g5 case from ebay.

A big thanks for the show really.

It was entertaining.

 

I think luke's team had the best "artistic project" but it's definitly not a 24/7 custom pc due to fire hasard.

In the opposite way , linus's team showed a clean work and a classy config.

 

Both were good exemple of what you can get from used parts for 900$.

Pretty cool season.

I wish i could oc my body, during winter overheating would be great.

I have a CX600 in my mom's PC. It hasn't destroy the planet yet. :D

The problem is some who don't know any better buys these and take its beyond its limits on their OC 24/7 machines with SLI, in which they are not designed for. Much like some who buys sub $50 motherboards and expect its to OC like a $400 one, it ain't going to happen, and this also applies to PSUs. Their decent for basic computers without any overclocking.

Same as most people, I was kind of disappointed at the "phone streaming" part, but was surprised at the quality of the whole series. Rod and Bob did a great job, especially Rods PSU cable thingy. 

Also what exactly was that wire in Team Linus build? The wire that made the system work. Didn't quite get that.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

The Linkworld 431-06 C.2828 Silver case can be eBayed. That is your best bet. 

I would strongly advise against modding a G5 case unless you really have a real passion for modding and a workshop area with a decent amount of tools. The G5 cases are a complete pain in the ass to convert to PC ATX in almost every way. It is not a trivial mod to do. At all.  There are many mod blogs switching a G5 case to PC ATX. Read a few of them first before you decide to do it.

A disappointing end to an otherwise good series. 

Linus is at fault here for rushing the last episode, and doing no B-roll of the systems even tho Edzel suggested it. That and the lack of a proper benchmark score rundown, system specs and the idiotic phone livestream just to promote Dbrand skins brought SYW4 from top to bottom. Better luck next season LTT.

You did catch the part where the power went out, right? 

 

There was lots that could have been better about the series end from the moment that the crew unloads in front of Luke's house. On that score, I am in complete agreement and I'd go so far as to say there is consensus among viewers on that point, too. But at least there were reasons for it - and It wasn't some stealth advert for DBrand. To lay that at Linus' feet as the motive for what happened with the power outage is being unfair.

This was exactly what I was thinking.

 

The one that got me the most was the scoring summary. We had no idea what the judges were even scoring, all we got were their quick explanations for why they give the score, and each of them explained differently so I had no idea what each score was for. Then we got a quick view of what each of them gave as a total. We had no idea how big of a difference the builds had from the judges score either, so there was no reference to how ahead Luke was. We also had no idea how you guys were using the scores of the judges too; were you taking the best score, averaging the three scores, or adding them all up?

 

Then the benchmarking was horrible. We didn't see the stats as they came through, so no idea what either of them scored for each test, and we never got to see the percent difference for each score in the end and what the overall score was at the end of the benchmarking. In the end, all we saw was the total score which was a one point difference that none of us had any idea what that actually meant.

 

Here are a few other things that I would like to add to what I really felt was missing:

 

  • Building - We missed out on the entire assembly and we never saw them even boot beforehand. Yeah, maybe there weren't any other assembly issues. But going through and watching them put it all together, ensuring everything fits, booting it up and seeing if it actually works first is always great and seeing Linus and Luke's initial reactions with their boot and vanilla benchmarks is always great.
  • Overclocking - Overclocking is always entertaining. Linus will sit there trying to thing of what he will need to hit to ensure he beats Luke and Luke stresses as he figures out if he can even overclock it. Luke also said he didn't overclock and we have no idea why, which we would have known if we saw the build process and him telling us why he can't or didn't want to.

I feel that Season 3 is still the best one they have done. Great competition, great episodes, and a great scoring system while keeping us all informed the entire way through.

The next season should definitely be in a different location since just like Luke said you've looted your area way too much. Since Linus was complaining about the Canadian dollar so much why not do it in the US? The Ontario side of the country has got to have tons of computer components. There is one of those computer refurb stores in Toronto (idk what the name of the one LMG helped at is called). This was a good season, but a lot of things could be changed to make it ever better.:D

Performance was based on 5 benchmarks the PC that won the benchmark got 10 points the pc that lost got the percentage (for example if the winning pc got avg 50fps and the loosing pc got 40fps the loosing PC gets 8 points. 

 

Linus won all benchmarks and got 50 points I think we picked up 36 points

The problem is some who don't know any better buys these and take its beyond its limits on their OC 24/7 machines with SLI, in which they are not designed for. Much like some who buys sub $50 motherboards and expect its to OC like a $400 one, it ain't going to happen, and this also applies to PSUs. Their decent for basic computers without any overclocking.

 

From the research I've done, people have issues with the sub par components used in them just not lasting. I mean I haven't heard of anybody's computer catching fire *stares directly at diablotek*. So I've gotta wonder. Is Corsair's RMA policy so difficult that its not worth saving the 20$ that you can scoop these PSU's for? 

I've been into good power supplies since I started building (just always made sense that the thing regulating power to over a grand worth of equipment should be a little bit more expensive) So I run a Thermaltake TRX 2 850W (which is severely under-loaded) and a Seasonic 550W in my wife's rig. 

Also certainly beats the shit out of the Bestbuy/futureshop brand Dynex PSU that linus used in one of the scrapyard war builds.
