AMD has been working towards this for probably 4+ years.... It should come as no surprise that AMD does well in DX12, it is almost their own creation (mantle inspired quite a lot of the features in DX12 it seems)

AMD=set their priorities correctly, they knew lower API game engines were the way forward in the future and since they really wanted mantle to become a thing, they designed basically all of their new cards for it hence why it does well with dx12 as it's so similar to mantle

 

While Nvidia=designed all their cards for max performance in dx11, good for the short run but terrible for the long run

The game has a checkbox in the options menu to enable DX 12. There is nothing stopping anyone running it under dx11.

It's ironic because I had the black screen issue when launching under DX12. It works since their patch.
I have an AMD card. So perhaps a better launch for AMD users. You also have to remember there are a lot less of us to encounter problems.

Honestly If anyone is angry about this they need to relax a little bit. Of course there are going to be teething issues with a new technology.
It even has a red block of text that comes up when you check the "enable DX12" box that warns people that DX12 might run worse than DX11 for some people.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

I picked up Hitman intro pack today to try the bench out on it.

I haven't had enough time to tweak settings and run it over and over to compare results yet.

But before work I ran dx11 and dx12 at max settings and I appeared to lose quite a bit of performance in dx12 mode?? 

I'll try to play around with things after work and figure it out, it just struck me as odd to go from ~70fps (dx11) to ~50fps(dx12)

Higher frame rate over higher resolution.

hmm clearly more work is required on the new renderer if that's the case.

DX12 is just a graphics API, not a magic bullet for anything. It requires the devs to put in the work to re-architect their engine for it. Otherwise a good DX11 implementation will outperform a rushed or early DX12 implementation.

I was showing around ~10% usage on gpu usage on gpu2 for dx12.

I've been reading around while at work, and apparently there's a NVinspector fix for the SLI bits that gets scaling up quite a bit.

Will try at home and update, could just be a wonky sli profile.

with dx11 it was up to NVIDIA / AMD to create SLI / crossfire profiles and tune the behavior. With Vulkan / DX12 and the new gen of explicit APIs the game devs have the power to do it themselves. They have to implement it. Until the devs do so SLI users such as yourself may get performance from DX11 assuming that NVIDIA has profiled the game.

all they did was crank up the tesselation that's only one aspect of dx11, they suck at pretty much everything else

aren't they supposed to use EMA with DX12 so we can get rid of the abomination that is sli/corssfire profiles and also shader optimizations

also it can be configured to not allow for telemetry with a couple service, scheduled job and group policy tweaks

 

tiles - you don't have to use them

microsoft account integration - you don't have to use it

new start menu - it's exactly the same as win7 if you don't want to use pinned tiles

universal apps - you don't have to use them

settings and control panel - you don't have to use them (control panel is still there and mmc.exe)

 

the rest of them you listed as positive...

invasive af - negative

dx12 - positive

tiles - aids

PROPER touchscreen support - never going to use it

microsoft account integration - horrible

new start menu -garbage

universal apps -aids

settings and control panel -horrible and childish looking

cortana - Turned it off as fast as I could, no one is really going to use it like Siri

task view - positive

microsoft edge - Still going to use chrome

desktop improvements - positive

security improvements - I don't know exactly what was improved

web search from desktop - THE WORST PART ABOUT IT EVER KILL THIS

xbox one game streaming -Don't have an xbox one

that dvr thing - positive

somewhat increased performance in general -Not really

memory leaks - all the time

 

 

so yea i see many reasons to stick with windows 7.

I wasn't really trying to go against what you said. I was kind of agreeing with you. Most of the "cons" to Windows 10 are entirely optional... Windows 10 is far from "sucking". There's no reason to not upgrade now.

Ah so this is why the game had trouble running after enabling DX12. Thought it was just my system. Seemed to run fine, but noticed massive object pop-in issues during benchmark runs. Will keep running the game in DX11 mode for now.

I've had some crazy spikes in ram usage. like 98% usage with the most being reported as "used" 12%. that was a driver issue (for me) on the network part of the mobo, while under win10. it got fixed by ASRock after some time, but during an episode (intense lag cuz sys ram filled) I lost the round for my teammates and I got flamed lol. not a big deal, but if I had stayed on win8.1 for a bit longer and waited, that wouldn't of happened ;)

 

shit breaks all the time. the super-aggressive updating isn't helping tbh. and now I've noticed how windows asks permission to install trusted apps, but if I leave the window open for a while without touching it, windows approves it and installation continues anyway. oke.

DirectX 12 happened to be much steeper API upgrade than every DX iteration before it. Not only the new D3D specs fundamentally shifted how applications interface with the hardware, but it comes with a brand new driver model for the OS (WDDM 2.0). Now both game developers and hardware vendors have to work head to head on an uncharted "minefield" -- new OS, new driver model, new API and even new app distribution system (UWP), all at the same time.
