Fresh problems for Nvidia users running DirectX 12

The Steam discussion boards have imploded with angry posts from players of both Rise Of The Tomb Raider & Hitman who own Nvidia GPUs about various issues.

 

1) Various users reported ROTR not displaying certain objects while rendering in DX12, this was affecting both AMD & Nvidia users. Nixxes have dropped a 70MB patch which seems to have addressed this issue.

 

2) Hundreds (if not thousands) of Nvidia users have reported DirectX 12 makes their game refuse to run at all, freeze while running or just display a blank/black screen. This issue is affecting Nvidia users only and is persistent across both ROTR and Hitman and occurs on hardware ranging from the 700 series cards all the way up to Titan Xs. AMD users are reporting zero issues with DX12 on either title.

 

3) DirectX 12 has completely broken SLI & Xfire. IMO this was to be expected and will be fixed over time with new App Profiles.

 

4) DirectX 12 has broken Vsync support on Nvida GPUs forcing a consant refresh rate and refusing to apply a double or triple buffered rate. Again, likely due to bad app profiles. Update - this issue seems to be related to issue 5 and can be overcome by playing in Borderless Windowed mode.

 

5) DirectX 12 seems to require Borderless Windowed mode in order to use G Sync or Free Sync (adaptive sync).

The big issue here is #2 which seems to be specifically caused by running DX12 on Nvidia hardware. It remains to be seen if this is a driver issue or something more serious going on.

 

So far no official word from Nixxes, IO Interactive or Nvidia on the freezing issues outside of IO telling Nvidia users to run Hitman in DX11 for the time being while they get the issue investigated further.

Wow, i was hoping for a better launch of DX12 games

are they saying the game doesn't allow you to switch back to DX11?

Just sitting here, still on Windows 7, and all is still well.

 

With the exception of Windows asking me if I want to change my color scheme. It would be really great if it could STOP DOING THAT >.<

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Until I see games that were bottlenecked by DX9/11 running significantly better on DX12, and/or a game that only runs DX12 releases that I really want to play, I wont be sacrificing Windows 7 for it. Ill be staying away from W10 for as long as possible.

 

That being said, DX12 deserves a good release, it has soooo much potential to finally move us on from the age of poorly optimised games that cant utilize the full power of a system due to the limitations of the API used.

Win10 has other benefits then just DX12....

AMD has been working towards this for probably 4+ years.... It should come as no surprise that AMD does well in DX12, it is almost their own creation (mantle inspired quite a lot of the features in DX12 it seems)

I know DX:MD would feature DX12 but when did they said it was DX12 only?

they said it would be DX12.

Its also one of the AMD titles releasing this year. AMD has been pushing hard as hell for DX12. You can bet it will be DX12 only.

From all the news i have heard is that DX12 is fully supported but they never said it was the only supported API nor they used the word exclusive but IIRC it was the first third party game that announced support for it and that was it.

trust me, it WONT have DX11. Because it doesnt need it. And honestly, devs have zero incentive to make a DX11 game. Unlike DX8, 9, 10, 11 this time around it is EASY for users to play DX12 games.

Most hardware from all manufaturers support DX12. (whilst Nvidia has dropped Fermi, GTX 600, 700 and 900 can use DX12, whilst on the AMD side you got the 7000, 200, 300 and Fury cards fully able to run DX12. For Intel we got HD 4000, HD 5000, HD 500 all supporting DX12)

Win10 is FREE, so there is no real cost involved in getting DX12.

 

 

Also, ALL CURRENT GEN CONSOLES RUN DX12 OR SIMILAR LOW LEVEL APIs, SO EVEN CONSOLES WONT BE HOLDING DX12 BACK.

DirectX 12  brand new API. Nowhere near the same as previous API's. I have expected this to happen as it allows games and gpus and other hardware to talk to each other better. This isn't without its problems as it supports a wide range of hardware. It'll only get better as time goes along.

I'll take that bet. Of course it will support DX11, why would they try and pull a Microsoft and limit their market to Windows 10 users only?

 

Just like Hitman (which is also a Gaming Evolved title) it will have an option to run in either DX11 or DX12 mode.

Every DX generation up until now has faced adoption issued because you had to BUY a new operating system. This time around it is FREE.

 

Meaning, aslong as the hardware supports it, there is NOTHING holding you back from getting Win10 and DX12. NOTHING. Except if you run Vista or XP... but really, who still play games using Vista or XP?

And even if you're a weirdo that's still on those OS, you can get win 10 as cheap as 25 bucks from kinguin

Irrelevant, if you've just spent hundreds of millions of dollars making a game you damn sure want to make sure as many people as possible can buy the thing, limiting you potential customer base by any amount is tantamount to chucking money down the toilet and pissing on it.

DX12 is broken just use it when the whole game is built off of it
