You made them sound like they were only bad. I don't think someone should go with a 980 with a Kraken G10 and an H55 over a 980 ti, and I don't think someone should overspend just to get an H110i when they don't even have a K-series CPU. Liquid cooling is not a cost-effective investment by any means, but it does simply perform better.

I don't know, my 850 EVO doesn't seem nearly as earth shattering as everyone on this forum likes to hype. It's nice getting 10%-40% faster loads in games (I install everything to the ssd), but the 15-20 seconds or so it cuts off my boot time is inconsequential since I turn on my computer twice a day. I feel like the $80 I spent to go for a 16GB DDR3-2400 kit to replace my 8GB DDR3-1600 kit was much more worthwhile since I can run cpu bound games like GTA V and Fallout 4 at higher settings thanks to better minimum framerates. And now I never have to worry about having a bunch of programs or chrome tabs open while gaming with that much memory. I mean I don't regret purchasing my ssd by any means, it's a nice luxury and there was nothing else I was going to get for $160 that was going to be much of an upgrade for my system. Maybe having the extra RAM has lowered how much I care about programs starting since I never have to close them.

You don't really notice the different while using a SSD. Get rid of it, you'll miss it dearly.

I just remembered something I forgot to say:

While I do absolutely recommend SSDs to anyone building a modern computer, people do seem to overestimate the impact of certain SSDs. They think a ~$180 950 Pro will make their system way faster than with a ~$90 850 Evo, and that's an absolute falsehood.

 

So many people stick an NVMe SSD in a <$2,000 build for absolutely no reason.

I get that but 2 GTX970s perform better then a GTX980ti so say if you win a GTX970 for free or something and one is one sale it makes sense to buy another

That sounds like when everyone says you'll notice the ssd being night and day better the second you install it. It wasn't for me, I doubt I'd miss it more than what I would by downgrading other components like gpu, cpu, memory, storage space, etc.

Back on Windows 8 going from HDDs to a boot SSD made a huge difference. I mean, Windows booted faster than my BIOS loaded. Windows 10 is slower, so whatever. It just feels snappier loading stuff and shit.

 

I've got a 240GB Kingston in my main desktop, an old crappy 50GB OCZ in my home server, a 120GB Kingston in my big laptop, and a 64GB Something in my small laptop. Once you go flash you don't go back. Except for the $30 64GB Corsair SSD I bought a couple years ago. That thing is weird.. It works 100% fine for normal data storage (Used it as a second drive in my laptop when I had just the aforementioned crappy 50GB in the main drive in it) but with Windows running off it it lasts maybe 2 weeks before everything is corrupted..

 

As for RAM and AIOs I say go for it if it's cheap. My AIO was like $30 or $40 on sale at Best Buy like 3 years ago and my 16GB kit was $30 in October. Otherwise, air cooling and 8GB get you by just fine.

The vast majority of gamers aren't going for 150 frames in the latest AAA titles at 4k. So $40 towards a better gpu that is already more than they want. An SSD will benefit them a lot more than an overkill gpu.

Not for gaming it won't, and GPUs age very quickly. A GTX 980Ti will last longer running games well on 1080p than a GTX 970. 3 years down the road just think about it.

3 years down the road is a damn long time for technology. If a 970 instead of a 980 lasts 3 years, I would be completely satisfied and an SSD would make my life much easier as I'm spending that 3 years using it.

I'm saying in 3 years a 970 will be a low-medium settings card, and the 980Ti on 1080p likely a high settings card.

I'd say the overclocking one is pushing it a bit. A thousand dollar gaming pc should be able to overlcock,gpu overclocking should be possible even on a $500 build. Mine totals out to about $800 with an overclocked cpu and gpu so specify a bit more on that one.

And i would take a good cooler over an ssd any day,a quiet pc compared to alittle faster load times is a pretty easy choice for me.

Especially when you have coolers like the cryorig h7 and 212 evo for $30.

I should have clarified more that I was talking more about CPU overclocking, and I mentioned in there that it depends on the budget. For Intel particularly, overclocking realistically requires a Z motherboard and aftermarket cooler, and if you don't overclock, you can save a lot of money and get a better GPU. If your budget is really high, it makes sense to overclock.

But an SSD won't improve gaming performance as much. Loading times take up a very small % of your time on a game, the rest of the game the storage medium is practically negligible.

I think the biggest problem with your argument is that you're only talking about games.

Yes, gamging performance is most important on a gaming computer. The problem is that it's a computer. People use gaming computers for a near infinite number of things, even if it's strictly meant for gaming. You don't want to cripple it elsewhere to get a few more FPS.

I think you're missing the point though. PC gamers almost all still use their pc for other tasks. I have never heard of anyone only using their computer for gaming and nothing else. An SSD is so much more benficial overall than a slightly better gpu.

Very few people can afford to or want a computer just for gaming. Chances are, if you have a decent gaming computer, it will do awesome for everything else. Also, once you build a system in the $1000 range, you naturally take pride in your system and want to use it as much as possible and also to get your money's worth.

Will you use that "Gaming Only Computer" to read this thread? SSD will help more than GPU. I think people way overestimate what you actually need to run games at 1080p. Honestly a $200 960 will run most AAA titles at high settings 1080p. There is more to computers in general than gaming.

I actually do need fast read speeds for games. ROTR takes a long time to boot up on my HDD which annoys me. I have a somewhat small SSD to store those few games with super annoying load times.

You also don't need 1000 fps on tf2 at 1080p. You get what would me most beneficial. I think by the responses, an SSD is more beneficial in almost every way than a slightly beefier gpu.
