Battlefield 5 rumored to be set in WW1

Obviously, Electronic Arts is making Battlefield 5. It said so a couple years ago, after all. So that's no surprise. But what might be is the setting, which according to a listing posted by Swiss retailer World of Games will be the First World War.

The listing, posted on Twitter and NeoGAF, describes Battlefield 5 as “Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg,” which translates in English to “Multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1.” The listing has since been changed to remove the WW1 reference, but it's too late... the internet remembers all.

The Great War would certainly be a change of pace, but I'm not sure how turn-of-the-century pistols and bolt-action rifles—not to mention the immobile, horrific grind of trench warfare—will translate into a videogame. How do you end up with something that isn't basically Team Fortress 2, but with each team limited to nine Snipers and a Heavy?

This is interesting, but i hope it is either WW2 cos of the nostalgia and replayability or Bad Company 3 for the great campaign of the first 2 games.

Here is the picture that sparked the rumour:

We will eventually find out when E3 2016 rolls around, until then, keep the rumour train rolling...

I'd be more happy to see a remake of BF2142.  Titan mode on  Suez Canal was a brilliant time burner.

Don't we have enough trench warfare games?  Didn't they go modern cause people were sick of WWI and WWII?  Have we collectively become tired of modern/future shooters?

Youre right, the WW1 setting is difficult, if you try and go super realistic with it. Battlefield and CoD games arent exactly known for being realistic, so I'm more than happy for them to go WW1 with some sensationalist video game flair. Games are supposed to be fun after all.

It might not be set on the western front, it could easily be the eastern front thus with little trench warfare, or it could be set in the Gallipoli campaign, Africa, the Pacific, personally I'm hoping for Gallipoli and Egypt.

Thanks to the direction set by COD (post-Modern Warfare), i think we need to see a return to real wars that impacted history

I have been wanting a properly done WW1 game for awhile.  While I have doubts this will be properly done - the styling is appealing in all likelihood and will be fun.  I look forward to it.  WW2 and WW1 games are still wondrous to me.  Those wars defined a century.

Not judging, but I am genuinely curious as to why?  No one will actually learn anything from it, in a historical sense.  And there is basically no weapon customization.  And everything is very limited in capability.  WWI and WWII games hold a lot of nostalgia for some people, but they are often more boring then some people remember.  I will say I do enjoy the simplicity of it all, don't have to know all 432556 weapons and all 3245978 of their weapon modifications possible.  Though WWI and WWII genre are much more geared towards the large team gameplay style, that hardware/software can actually handle better now.

Treyarch was able to do decent weapon customization in Black Ops. It's a video game, so they're able to do what they want unless they're going for 99% (leaving 1% available because video games) authenticity.

The important part of the leak is the word "Multiplayer" as in online only, no campaign again.

Fuck you EA and fuck you DICE for allowing EA to push you around. I guess this is another battlefield I'll be skipping.

Who plays the campaign anyway all the good battlefields have been online only like BF2, BF2142 etc.

Youtuber Jackfrags (maybe some of you know him) recently did a video about battlefield 5 and the setting and compared what different scenarios the last games had. He came to the conclusion that most likely it will be set in near future because bf4 is heading this way with its dlcs.

Anyway at the end he asked his viewers on a strawpoll what they want to see and WWII was leading  the poll. I would link the vid but I'm on my phone right now...

I personally don't want another near future game with ficitional wars but rather a beautifully made shooter set in either world war.

But I wouldn't get too excited its rumor in the end...

I must admit I genuinely enjoyed playing Battlefield 3's campaign, I've not yet played BF4 due to reports from good friends online about it's reliability.
