I don't know how to start this but lately stuff has been going on my life. Ever since I was little I love shooters computer games and I guess to an extent my parents think I have a addiction?? My grades wern't the best and I would always have a "talk" about me doing better but in reality nothing really changed. My days consisted of school and coming home and just sit at the computer for 5-6 hours a day usually a few hours of that was just straight gaming, I don't really study a lot but I do some. So parents taking action they removed my pc and contacted my schools counciler and principles and talked about me and stuff. Do you guys think my parents did the right thing or could've there been an alternative way??

They did the right thing.  You seem to have issues, like most young guys, with delaying gratification and prioritization.  Left unchecked this will wreak havok throughout the rest of your life, less success in school, in later work, in later income, in life itself.  And eventually, you will be living in a van down by the river where the only women you can pull with your income from plastic bottle recycling are homeless chicks with head lice.

 

 

You parents, because they love you, want you to avoid this fate, and so they engage in the punitive task of removing the temptation entirely.  Your goal now, is to avoid the fate of the kids of the marshallow experiment, whose inability to hold off on immediate rewards (the video game playing) propagated in thousands of decisions throughout a life causing lowered outcomes.

 

You have power though, gameless child.  In your incalculable boredom try something novel, get your work done early, better your grades, make a good faith effort.  If you are in the home of a tiger mom this will not be enough, you will also need to learn violin/cello within 2 weeks or you will be disowned, but let's cross that bridge if it comes to that.

Did you receive good grades in earlier schooling? Maybe they are concerned that you are spending too much time on games compared to school and that is shown by your current grades. I'm in my final year now and I try not too play anything during the week, although sometimes I can't resist, I just look forward to Friday nights and the weekend. I think currently they are doing that in your best interest, but I'm sure if you can prove to them that you can do well in school, they will let you play again, but just remember, if that happens, it can all easily be taken away again if you show that with games your marks go down again.

 

Anyway, just my input. Not sure what grade you are in but it took me 4 years of senior schooling to realize that working hard for one more year can lead to better opportunities for the rest of my life. Luckily for me, only the 5th year of high school counts towards my overall position, but for other people they only understand after its too late. Anyway, good luck

Try copying notes out in a more concise way then read over those new notes often.

Your parents did the right thing, even if you don't feel like they did at the moment, you will thank them later in life.
Your number one priority should be getting good grades and graduate from school, not playing games for 6+ hours a day. Sure we could argue that you can technically make a living out of playing games nowaday, but if youtube goes under tomorrow, that's a lot of "let's players" who will suddenly find themselves trying to find a job again and having a degree or two will more than help you with that. It's all about having a backup plan and not having regrets. Especially these days when even bottom level jobs are starting to somehow require superior education, even though someone with brain damage could do those.

 

Enjoy your youth while you still can(with moderation), go make friends, graduate from school. Because there's no going back. You'll have all the time you want after you've reached adulthood to play games. (until you have kids or something)

My parents were frustrated with the amount of time I spent with my PC for a long time after I first built one. My situation was a little different because my grades were still pretty good. I won't deny that having a gaming PC in your bedroom is a major distraction - that's because your room functions as a haven for leisure as well as an office, and getting work done in such a comfortable environment can be difficult. You could try compromising with your parents by doing your homework and studying in a boring place without distractions, like at the kitchen table. This should help you stay focused long enough to get your work done and improve your grades. Your parents will probably be willing to return your PC to you if you demonstrate that you can practice good study habits.

This is a very good suggestion, one clearly from a person skilled in the art of parental manipulation.  Be overt about spending hours in a public space away from the computer/games just doing homework and reading and solving problems.  Seeing this visibly will give the impression that you have that as a primary focus, this will in turn tend to lessen the leash they may normally place upon the kid under their care when it comes to leisure activities.

Hmm...

In my case, my parents were just mad that we use our computers for too long that it has been increased our power bills.

 

Regarding your problem, I think it's simply about discipline and priorities.

Make sure that you have done all you need to do before gaming.

Make sure you game at reasonable lengths (time wise).

Prioritize your studies over gaming.

 

I know that it's easier said than done, but that's what I did, and it helped a lot.

Yes.

 

You shouldn't be focused on games when your grades are suffering or when you don't do your schoolwork or listen to your parents to do better. So if you come home and go straight to the PC to game, they made a smart choice. You will thank them later when you have a good life with a stable job instead of barely scrapping by off the government's teat wishing you had done what your parents asked you to do or what you should have done.

 

Study and apply yourself—show your parents you can be responsible—and you will get your gaming privileges back. And feel a whole lot better.

I spent gaming all my adulthood. I was far more on games than 5-6 hours per day. I was only working 3 days per week so I had the rest of the time playing, all the time. Eventually, I realized that it's not a good life for me so I went back to college, got my degree and now I working in the place that I don't need to get dirty, but in addition to that I have never stopped playing video games. I was only limiting my time to play, times it would go out of control again, but I always tried to get college stuff done first.

 

One of my work colleges also went to college with me and we graduated together, he is a lot younger than me, he is 22 years old and making all this money (as he said once, I don't even know what to get next, he said this after he built his kickass gaming rig). Just because he did go to school and college, and didn't drop out shows you how much better later life can be if you just invest some of your effort when you are younger. I agree that everyone is different and for some people studying can only happen in later life, but if I was you I would give my best stab at education as early as possible. Having said that, I would never give up gaming. If everything is done, such as homework, chores or gym then I would play for the rest of my evening which is not 5-6 hours but rather 2 or 3 hours at most.

 

I don't really want to sound like your parent or anything, I just wanted to share my feelings towards your situation because I sort of went trough that, apart from I had no parents to take away my PC from me. I think your parents did a wrong thing taking your gaming away rather than limiting the time you spend while gaming. But maybe they did try to lower the hours you "waste" and grabbed last resort by isolating you from the source all together? The priority of things you do everyday is everything in my opinion. So I honestly suggest think about small things you would like to do before going on PC for the rest of the evening. After a while, them lower hours of gaming becomes more than enough, or maybe I'm just getting old?

 

To summarize and answer your questions I believe that your parents should have looked at alternatives rather than complete shutdown, I think they did wrong thing (but that's just my opinion). Ultimately tho, you have to decide if they did the right thing or not yourself and because you came here and asked these on forum I think you kind of feel they did the right thing? But also are a bit angry and bored right now for not being able to play?

I would be in a similar situation, but I can do well at school with little work other than homework. My parents don't like me spending as much time as I do on my computer, but they haven't got any example as to how it's not helping me when I come home the same day with 85% on a Maths test I didn't revise for.

Its the same for me but I dont sit in my PC for 5-6 hours straight, what i do is study in school and do homework in school too so i have my whole afternoon free, sometimes I go to the gym and play in my pc for 2-3 hours. That is what i wopuld reccomend, dedicating your whole morningg in the school studying and getting proof that you do that with grades and then show your parents how you study so the give you your computer back.
