Thought I should do a follow up post on the status of this project

If it's from the US, I don't trust it.

My web browser is Chinese and my mail account and search engine is Russian.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

What exactly is this? poked around on the site and it just seems to get you past school firewalls

In cryptography, a certificate authority or certification authority (CA) is an entity that issues digital certificates. A digital certificate certifies the ownership of a public key by the named subject of the certificate

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_authority

basically it is the basis system we use to make sure we can trust that the website we go to is actually the one it says it is.

It has nothing to do with getting around firewalls.

It is open source, If you have reason to doubt it,  review the code. see for yourself if it is legit

Can you please expand the opening post explaining exactly what the website is, and why we should care that it's in public beta? I'd advise posting a brief explanation of what a certificate authority is and what potential practical uses it has.

Why don't you trust it? (If you mean what I think you mean, you should already trust it because it's cross signed by a bunch of other CAs)

Here's the first site I found with a LE cert: https://www.zugtv.de/

See if it gives you a certificate error.

If it's from a surveillance state hell bent on monitoring everything everywhere, I don't trust it.

My web browser browser e-mail provider and search engine are from surveillance states that would like to be monitoring everything, but due to their limited resources focus on domestic dissident suppression and industrial espionage.

You're just a hipster, desu.

It says there is no certificate transparency and it uses obsolete TLS 1.2...

No idea what it means, but especially that obsolete thing worries me.

Don't get errors tho, but still. it's something and it works.

Didn't this happen quite a while ago?
Yep, December 3. Guess nobody posted it on the forum until now.

Pretty great stuff. Lots of respectable companies behind it such as Mozilla, the EFF and IdenTrust so I am not worried about the quality of the service.

Too bad NetGear made it a pain in the ass to use a trusted SSL cert on their NASes...

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not.

TLS1.2 is not obsolete TLS1.3 is only in draft.   The 'No certificate transparency' message is not a major cause for concern.

TLS1.2 is the latest stream encryption standard in common use on the web, and has nothing to do with the cert itself.

What do you mean by transparency though? (or, what error did your browser give you) since that site should be on crt.sh

It's been in public beta for a while - I have a le cert on my site, and it has been working fine (though I think it expires soon, so I need to remember to renew it).

The news post you linked is from the 3rd December.
