After dealing with driver issues from both camps Id say nvidia is the lesser of the two evils.

People see a separation that doesn't exist in reality between the two companies. This is because humans would rather believe a comfortable lie, than accept an inconvenient truth. Competition works when consumers are willing to research and choose the better value. Not blindly follow a brand into the dirt.

Bud. The OP literally asked a 3 word question and you turning it into deep philosophical type stuff.

I'd digress

AMD - 1 bricked driver so far in MY experience

Nvidia - several bricked drivers, OS corruption, BSOD heaven, CTRL-ALT-DELETE

Both have pros and cons, they trade blows from game to game...they perform similar at the end of the day, the 970 is cooler and overclock a ton and support a shit load of amazing features where as the AMD will have no problem running higher quality textures in games for ages due to a better memory configuration but will lack the GPU horsepower to fully run the settings that would REQUIRE anything more than 4GB of video memory texture quality aside anyways(AKA not ''i will fill it if it's there kinda deal...more like now i hitch and pause all over the place kinda deal - NOT THE SAME THING BTW) none are perfect but the 970 is closer to it IMHO. The 390 will have a few more frames per second in well optimized titles but the 970 will have better frame timing, most likely better minimums and better day 1 compatibility with games...and better driver support overall.

Well yeah that was just my experience with them. One all I had to do was delete the drivers and reload geforce experience, and the other well the drivers downloaded but never worked so yeah. lol Idc which has more issues but in my experience over the past few years Id pick nvidia but I only bought one amd card the 295x2. Card ran good but the driver issue bothered me to no end and I didnt really like the raptr software either.

Edit: certain games run better on nvidia so if the games you want run better on nvidia or on amd thats the card for you.

I missed you too honey.

The GPU horsepower has NOTHING to do with VRAM usage. I've used all 4GB on my 860M while being at 80% utilization. For a GPU weaker than a 950, that should not be possible following your logic (no modding - just game settings)

The only features you can bring up that do not have an AMD counterpart are gamestream and slightly better OBS rip-off. Nothing else.

970 being the perfect GPU? Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. no.

Horsepower vs Ram is completely up to the application. Many games want to stuff a crap load of draw calls and geometry data down the pipe, rather than try to optimize, they hope and pray you have enough power. (*cough*bethesda*cough*)

The 390 almost certainly has more raw horsepower, but its limited by it's own drivers, the DX/GL apis, and the applications running on it. Hopefully that'll improve. We'll see.

The main issue using the VRAM as a deciding factor is that you have to show that the additional VRAM is beneficial. You have to work at it to go over the VRAM available on the 970. So there is a stalemate. If turning off Gameworks features is acceptable for performance on the 390, then limiting settings that could endanger the 970 is as well. If you go ultra settings or bust, they both suffer. So that is why I see the VRAM as a non issue.

Right now, for sure its a non issue. In the future, we'll see. People said 4GB was pointless a few years ago.

Thing is, WetFurWorks, GimpWorks, FailBreaks and any other creative library in that shoebox of a blackbox also fucks up 90% of Nvidia cards currently in use. There's a reason that 780 Ti owners are pissed up their arsehole that a 960 is beating a 780 in Witcher 3.
