"Global warming" is the older term for a reason. They use the more accurate term, "global climate change" now, because the actual effect is that as the average global temperature rises, some places will get hotter and some places will get colder. The United Kingdom, for example, is nearly as far north as parts of Siberia… the reason it is as temperate as it is is because of the access it has to warm ocean currents. Scientists believe those currents are in danger of stopping if climate change continues as it is, which would make the British Isles much, much colder.

 

It takes years of study after-the-fact to determine if global climate change was linked to our weather or not. Many scientists have suggested there could be a link with many of the unusually powerful hurricanes and seasonal monsoons we've seen in the last few years. You can bet it's affecting those people, if true.

Oh wow. I never thought of that. As long as scientists find a way to faze out coal and eventually oil in the next 20 years, the planet will be fine(my opinion).

Oh wow. I never thought of that. As long as scientists find a way to faze out coal and eventually oil in the next 20 years, the planet will be fine(my opinion).

 

Unfortunately it's not currently possible to get rid of coal and fossil usage by 100%.  We can stop using coal and oil for the production of city-nation wide energy.  Nuclear is one of the best alternatives for generating energy, and it has the potential to meet our ever growing need as more and more developing countries become increasingly industrialized.

 

However aside from the production of electricity, coal and fossil fuels are still used in other industries, such as the smelting and refining of iron and steel.  So until we find alternative methods where those industries can switch away from burning coal, it will still be mined.

 

We can't stop the growing human population, we cannot stop the growing need for more energy or food, but we can be smarter about all of these things.

 

We can work on producing less waste.  We can consume less materials.  We can recycle more.  Plant more trees, grow backyard or windowsill gardens.  Stop driving fuel inefficient vehicles, especially in cities where using a gas guzzling car like an SUV is pointless, use more public transportation or bicycles.

No, I really don't think it's as bad as people say, and tbf, most evidence for human caused climate change is questionable as all the charts I've seen don't even go back 200 years. There's no doubt that climate change exists, it happens naturally, but people don't seem to realise that it's a change that can take thousands, if not millions of years, so less than 200 years doesn't really tell you anything.

 

Just seems like a move to con people into spending more on shit to 'save' the planet or a reason to tax fossil fuels even more... Eco nuts can do what they want, personally, I'm not going to inconvenience myself unless there's solid proof that this isn't just part of a natural cycle.

With the winter we're having this year(or rather NOT HAVING) I can honestly say that the climate change is as bad as those treehuggers claim it to be.

It's like spring in Belgium right now. There are still damn mosquitos, flowers growing that shouldn't grow till spring.

Its not about belief. Its about either being qualified to understand or having enough understanding of how and why the scientific method works to accept the growing body of evidence and consensus.

Several arguments have popped up here that can be addressed easily enough.
"But climate change is a natural cycle and that is all this is" - ok, yes, correct. The earth has a cyclical climate but you have to ask yourself what causes changes in it. To simplify - Stuff in the atmosphere. What are we putting in the atmosphere? Stuff.

"But money and research grants are incentive for dodgy research" - Yes,though I question the motives of the questioner at this point give just how much more money goes into the coffers of those paid to prop up the fossil fuel industries.This is what the peer review system is for. Making a name for yourself in science can be as simple as proving some one else's research a complete fraud. Like the supposedly conclusive pieces of research that showed high cancer rates in rats fed on genetically modified food for instance. Completely dodgy study was discredited and pulled. 

To the emotive and logical -
The risks of doing nothing far outweigh the costs something. Island nations are rather quickly disappearing - ignoring that is just plain deliberate ignorance at this point.
And in reality... The world will be a better place if we switch to sustainable energy supplies. (see china/Indonesia pollution health effects).

"The wheel?" "No thanks, I'll walk, its more natural" - thus was the beginning of the doom of the Human race.

Climate change:

More freak weather than every before, changing or unreliable seasons, droughts, floods, melting ice caps, etc etc.

And although so may say "so what if the climate is changing", an easy comparison should be, can we support the population of human beings when more of the land becomes desert? As I am aware its a reality facing the east coast right now in the US.

But, it extends well beyond that, as climates change, its not just us at risk from freaky weather, but entire food chains and other species we rely on.
Lets take fishing, cod, haddock etc. Their main food stuff is plankton, tiny organisms they as good as swim around and gobble up. BUT, with a slight raise in temps for those tiny things have made the water less "viscous". Aka its less like swimming in treacle for them. And the problem with this is they can now outswim the predator!
So fish stocks (our food) that feed on this (their food) are falling.

Then there is what Nomy has touched on, the seasons make farming and growing crops more tricky.
Some of the plants, including veg in my little garden sown at the end of autumn are sprouting in the middle of winter here! They are not supposed to start sprouting till spring!
Is this a big deal?
Yes!
They will literally rot with the wet weather.

There are thousands and thousands of studies, from wildlife to food, forestry to water, and chemistry (did you know the Oceans are soaking up some of that CO2? GREAT some say,,, but what it really means? the oceans are becoming acidic, think corals and other habitats being destroyed as well as soft rock coastline).

And all saying that the way we are changing the world, is dangerous!

The problem is that Global Warming is FAR more complicated than most people realize. Well meaning people try to explain it in simple terms, but it always ends up being only part of the truth, wrong, or a gross oversimplification. This makes it easy for people (like Fox News) to poke holes and say it's fake when Al Gore tries to explain Global Warming to the scientifically illiterate American populous. Also our understanding of it is constantly changing and there is much disagreement in the scientific community regarding pretty much everything. Most will agree however that *something* is happening and it's not going to be good for us.

 

That's not to say scientists aren't as bad.

 

The basic problem is that Global Warming *IS* happening, it's gonna change a lot, and drastic global change is the last thing a planet with 7 billion people needs.

Environmental issues like habitat distruction however I feel needs to be taken care of sooner. I don't mean it in a 'save the Pandas' sort of way, but more of a 'save the f*cking keystone species that we rely on' sort of way. Take GMOs. People need to stfu about possible health risks by eating it. It's too soon to say what the long term health effects are regarding most GMOs. The *real* problem is that they're f*cking up the ecosystems we rely on for efficient food production and we need to stop supporting that.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Climates a problem sure, but we've got other problems aswell. Mainly the second thing said. But back on topic the last thing listed proves we have a problem. 70 degrees in late december. Thats a problem
