And for the most part they're pretty shit at it. You want to know what happens 99% of the time when some one has depression? They get pills stuffed in their face and are basically told to deal with it or just "talk to someone". Or because there are people who for some reason like the fucking blame the depressed person for being depressed they fall further into depression because of the retarded social stigma attached to it!

 

Not only that but people who feel like everything is their personal fault because of the very condition they're affected by they are less likely to keep trying ineffective treatments or try alternate ones.

Yeah. A lot of times they'll turn to drinking, drugs, or other highly destructive behavior to try and forget about being depressed.

Honestly I have never had to or had someone around me deal with depression so I feel it may be out of what I can vouch for at this point.

Honestly I have never had to or had someone around me deal with depression so I feel it may be out of what I can vouch for at this point.

Wow, this story.  I don't have much to say, but I do have a parallel to a past situation of my own and the experience of going through some similarities of circumstance.

 

I was 23, working at a major bank(head office), and going to university.  I was beaten up by a bunch of cops (4).  I will leave the details out but I will say that I was wrongfully detained... I had not done anything wrong.  Someone wanted to hurt me and called the police.  They said I was attacking people with a knife during a party.  I was not doing any such thing.... anyways.

 

It really fucked with my head.  I had a good little ego in relation to my physical capabilities.  Having to bow down to a bunch of cops and letting them hit me without a defense was bad enough.  They had me down for 5 separate charges of assault against them.  I only stood still and took their shots.  Never made a peep during it.

 

I could not focus at work or at school.  All I could think about was how I was going to go to trial against them and if I would have to.  I had a good lawyer (Greenspan firm, yeah the brother of the US federal reserve chairman dude), that cost a good amount.  It was not enough to settle my mind though.  My performance at work tanked.  I stuck around long enough to be able to pay my lawyers, along with $5000 from my grandfather.  Man that was a shitty time.

 

I don't know what this guy went through, but I can only imagine it was multitudes of what I had experienced.  He was an established citizen, I was a student.  Ego has a big effect in these situations.  The more capable you are, the more you want to right the wrong.  You eventually realize it was no more than schoolyard bullying, in an "adult" world. 

 

So, as someone mentioned, you could go after them physically... that way they could never do it to anyone else.  You can try to fight it out legally:  Win a defense case, and then counter sue.  You can save yourself and be done with the situation (what I did, I settled)...<<that is selfish, but I did not have to money to continue.

 

I never thought of killing myself though.  He must have been really pissed off.  The story make me sad, as it should.

 

Cops are citizens, they should be held accountable for their actions... period.  Are we going to have to get to the point where a war between police and capable young men begin to fill the headlines?  Are we going to keep hearing about idiot officers abusing/murdering innocent people without resolution for the lives it destroys?  IDK, had to much wine tonight =/

Most of my family lives here too, so we'd either have to all move to be safe, or find some way to protect ourselves. And if they did kill us, the police would make it look like an accident and do a mock investigation. Everyone would mourn and say how horrible it is that we were gone, but no one would suspect a thing, or if they did, they'd be too afraid of the same thing happening to them. I don't know if I'm exaggerating, but I don't see it playing out many other ways in such a small town.

 

If your situation screwed with your head, imagine the havoc it'd wreak on someone with depression. Murdock possibly felt that since the police themselves were the aggressors, he had nowhere to turn, like the whole world was against him. The police are supposed to be the ones protecting us, so what do you do when you need protection from them? I wish we knew more about what caused the police to attack him and the situation that led to such severe depression. I want to understand the entirety of what's going on.

I believe the best way to explain how much his head was "spinning" is throughout the thread already:  You can change things if you stick it out, but not if you are not around.  Choosing to live gives you a chance to change things, even if you do not follow through.

Don't get me wrong is nothing personal but you really should not speak about things you might not fully comprehend: depression is deeply misunderstood, most treatments actually don't work or carry far too many negative consequences and the worst thing you can tell a depressed person it's "Get over it, you have people who love you!" that's like telling someone "Stop being blind, your family wants you to see!" You're not depressed because you fucking like it you just sometimes can't do anything about it.

I agree. Look at Ian idk if this is too soon but did he really kill himself over 1 altercation with the police. He could have lived through it and actually raised awareness and shit. Maybe he did it so he could get his name everywhere. I didn't hear his name until now..

1) You're a terrible person for saying he killed himself just so that he could get attention (he was already rich, famous and successful, even though you had not heard of him before).

2) In his own posts, which I recommend you read, he says that he did it to raise awareness, because nobody seemed to care when it was only poor and black people doing it.

 

 

 

 

This entire thread is making me sick. I didn't call people who commit suicide stupid or selfish, but suicide as an action, in most cases, is selfish and stupid. People do it a lot of the time because they feel like everything is terrible and won't ever get better, but it can and does get better. In the case of the terminally ill who are going to lose control of their lives I 100% sympathize, but a lot of people have a lot to live for and kill themselves before they can ever see it.

 

Sorry if I pissed you off. But let's not put words in my mouth or try to invalidate what I say by claiming that I have no comprehension of it or experience with it when I have been there.

I hope they will release the cause of his death soon. If it was due to police brutality, maybe, and sadly, the death of a successful white person will put something in motion. Goes without saying that if any form of police brutality was involved hopefully something happens. 

I would still like to hear the other side of the story.

The creator of Debian has died. It's Official.

With a heavy heart Debian mourns the passing of Ian Murdock, stalwart proponent of Free Open Source Software, Father, Son, and the 'ian' in Debian.

Ian started the Debian project in August of 1993, releasing the first versions of Debian later that same year. Debian would go on to become the world's Universal Operating System, running on everything from embedded devices to the space station.

Ian's sharp focus was on creating a Distribution and community culture that did the right thing, be it ethically, or technically. Releases went out when they were ready, and the project's staunch stance on Software Freedom are the gold standards in the Free and Open Source world.

Ian's devotion to the right thing guided his work, both in Debian and in the subsequent years, always working towards the best possible future.

Ian's dream has lived on, the Debian community remains incredibly active, with thousands of developers working untold hours to bring the world a reliable and secure operating system.

Debian for those who don't know is a Linux Distribution which is made for power users.

 

UPDATE -  This is what led up to his death

 

He knocked on his neighbors door, somehow the police arrived on the scene, He assaults an officer, he's arrested, Goes to jail,  Posts bail money of $25,000 USD, They let him leave. A few days later he died.
