1 = .999?

babadoctor

so

1/3 is fraction for 0.333 repeating

1/3 as a fraction is 0.33333333333333333333333333333333333333...

... and on with threes infinitely.

Seeing as 0.9 recurring (0.999999...) is infinite it can't really have a fraction form.

its fraction form is 3/3, also known as 1

proof;

1/3 = 0.33333...

0.99999... / 0.33333.. = 3

thus

3x 1/3 = 0.99999... = 3/3 = 1

wat

1/3 is a third. 0.333 repeating is never ACTUALLY a third, that's why it's repeating.

math is math

math is a social construct

what are you saying this "math is a creature"

I didn't mean it litterally, it's like some new species that was just descovered, weird. I never implied that math was a living being or something like that, It was just a metafore to say that math isn't the most straight forwaird think in the world ;-)

well, thats the clue, if you go into infinity, it is 1/3

but you cannot really work with an infinite length number on paper, thats where the "..." came from.

Yes, it's implied that it's a third, but it never is, it never can be.

0.999 will reach 1 at an infinite point if you keep adding 9's to the end of it. it will form an exponential curve if you were to measure it's numerical distance from 1 against the value of 1

no it would never reach one

because it would keep getting smaller

Yes, Both subjects are incredibly big and intresting but there are just some things that can't be explained using our current technollogy and way of thinking...

No, even if the distance from 1 equals to 10.^-100M (0.000000000000000000000000000....1 meter), it will never be 1 or actually theoretically touch the 1.

It's similar to magnetism. Theoretically, the force width of a magnetic field is infinite, yet the force of a magnetic field decreases substantionally by the width. We can't really feel the magnetic force or it wont attract any objects.

Not possible. 3/3 is one, which zero point nine recurring is not. It can get infinitely close to one, but it will never get there.

I know 0.9 recurring being 3/3 is logical, but it's not. Math is strange.

Yes, it's implied that it's a third, but it never is, it never can be.

thats one of the problems with infinity mathematicians face.

you'll never be able to type the infinite number of 3's to make it a third, but in theory an "infinite" number of 3's makes it a third.

as i mentioned before, this is one of the easiest ones.

here's one of the ones that blow the minds of some of the greatest mathematicians, and it's actually used in scientific research:

the thing with "infinitely close" is that at that point substracting results in an infinite number of zeros.

no i mean like

1/3 = 0.333

2/3 = 0.666

3/3 = 0.999???

3/3=1 which can be re written as .999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999

1/3 is 0.333333333... without end too.

0.999 or 0.999 repeating?

0.999 is 999/1000, 0.999 repeating can't be written as fraction

0.9 recurring can be written as a fraction.

n = 0.9999

10n = 9.9999

9n = 9

9/9 (= 1 :P)

One can never equal 0.9... no matter how many nines. It will always fall short by an incredibly small amount.

that doesn't even make sense

Explain why? If you let that recurring decimal be expressed as n and then have it so that you don't have the decimal places anymore (*9) then you divide both sides by 9 you get a fraction of 9/9.

The method I used does work though :P

0.3 recurring

n = 0.3333

10n = 3.3333

9n = 3

n = 3/9 or 1/3

that doesn't even make sense, you get n=1 again which you know is 0.9 recurring...

It makes sense logically, but not mathematically. It seems like it should work like that, but it doesn't. Because math.
