1 = .999?

babadoctor

Does 1 = .999?

Also if its called 0.999(repeating) then why isnt 1 called 0.999?

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

0.999... will never equal 1, only if you start rounding it off a bit... You'll ge very close to one but you'll never reach it. The most recent video from vsauce explains a similar thing.

no i mean like

1/3 = 0.333

2/3 = 0.666

well, the thing with "repeating" is that the difference becomes infinitely small, because if you substract the result will be an infinite number of zeros before you reach the 1, hence, you'll never reach the 1, hence the difference is zero.

Nope. 1/3 is 0.3 recurring, meaning the amount of threes is infinite. Same for 2/3, infinite sixes. One, however, is one. 0.999... no matter how many nines you put on it will never equal one.

1/3 is 0.333333333... without end too.

so then what is 0.999 in fraction form?

0.999 or 0.999 repeating?

0.999 is 999/1000, 0.999 repeating can't be written as fraction

3/3=1

One is always one

There is no proper fraction form for .99999

?

1/3 is 0.333333333... without end too.

i kno that

These things are like pi... they have no fixed value... as far as we know... This definatly is a very interesting subject to discuss but really... 0.999... according to current math is not equal to one, however it is as well... Like you already said, math is a strange creature

Seeing as 0.9 recurring (0.999999...) is infinite it can't really have a fraction form.

well, this is one of the easiest to explain problems in math. i still wonder what the guy that thought of "1+2+3+4+... = -1/12" ate that morning...

so

1/3 is fraction for 0.333 repeating

it's not really 1/3 =/= 0.333, it's never actually 0.333, it just goes on and on and on, never actually becoming equal. We just type 0.333 repeating in some cases so that you could understand it's a third.
