Besides, scouring the used market is something the minority of people on tech forums do. Your average consumer does not do that.

Precisely: even if not always used people want to have a warranty and a store vs a gamble of a card that might be working but dying i.e. I could sell my 290x works fine under benchmarks and games for a little while yet I know it's dying.

I'm not sure I would go near that one from Sapphire. That cooler doesn't look beefy enough to cool Hawaii and allow overclocking, but we'll have to wait for benchmarks. As of right now, I'm skeptical.

 

EDIT: Also, these cards must be selling better than we thought if they're confident enough to make these.

Hawaii != Grenada, Grenada has better power management and such therefore runs *a bit* cooler. Plus, it's most likely a slightly cut down core too

Oh btw they are selling better as they're basically a better 970 for cheaper (And the 380 > 960...etc)

Wish they'd make it mITX as well. Save on VRAM and material cost for even lower price. And then appeal to the SFF market. Would've put the final nail in the coffin for Nvidia in the sub $300 segment.

The development cost would trump any savings on materials or components. They'd have to ship a lot of volume of that particular card, and SFF cards don't usually sell as well as full-sized cards do.

Grenada are simply binned Hawaii's. They are identical chips aside from that. With being binned, they are able to make the cards with better/tighter power management and as a result, get a little higher stable clocks out of the box.  

 

These "budget" 4GB 390's won't be any more cut down than the regular 8GB 390's and 290's they replaced.

Anyway for next gen GPUs I can see top one being with 16GB VRAM and lower ones with less while mid ones start from 8GB

I'm really not sure I understand you and everyone else that says the 380x is not worth the money. It costs $230. What exactly is the problem?

I honestly don't see the point of more than 8GB HBM. 4 GB already holds it own quite well. People are saying the 390 and 390x can't utilize their 8GB of GDDR5. Anything more than 8GB HBM is even dumber.

Because of their often coil whining cheap power delivery and solder, which is why they hit low price points. Just like others who hit low price points. Some are just more reckless, like Sapphire and Powercolor.

That improved power management is all down to the vendors, and its only a small improvement at that.

 

 

It's about to get even easier to flash your 290x to a 390.

The price difference will be too close and performance gap is pretty huge between 380x vs 390 4GB unless AMD decide to jack up the 8GB price and put 4GB version at current 390s pricing.

You can get R9-390 8GB PCS+ for $309 right now or $289 after rebate.

Sooo now we have a complete full re-release of the R9 290, at least for non-reference models, albeit slightly higher binned (on average). Man, for a while you could find R9 290 cards for $240-260 or so. If AIBs find a way to sell this for $280 (yes yes, I know MSRP is $300 but who sticks to that? MSRP isn't MAP), then I couldn't be happier.
