Scientists Unravel a Little More of the Mystery Behind Fast, Intense Radio Signals from Space

The phys.org article has some really good information.

For the past few years, radio astronomers have been haunted by a phantom called "fast radio bursts." Radio observatories detect a fast, high energy signal coming from seemingly out of nowhere, then just as quickly disappearing before they've had any chance to figure out where they came from or what caused them. The radio signal is spread out enough to indicate it came from a far off galaxy, but beyond that, not much is known.

...

But finally, as relayed today in Nature,  radio astronomers at the NRAO Green Bank Observatory have taken one very small step toward it. It all happened by accident.

...

It was only caught at resolution of 1 millisecond, usually not enough to discern anything about the signal. Except, in this case, the survey was searching for neutral hydrogen, meaning it had to be attuned to both negative and positive particles as well. This meant that, for the first time, the Green Bank team caught richer data on polarization of the signal.

...

Specialized software helped extract the fast radio burst from more than 40 terabytes of survey data, and gave the sliver more of information astronomers now have. But the mystery of the fast radio burst still isn't solved.

I think my favorite part of this is that, once again, a significant find happened by accident. These are the best kinds of discoveries in my opinion.

Wow, that's always been an interesting aspect of space.

Still creepy nonetheless

Yeah now if they only figure wtf the Great Attractor is maybe we'd be getting somewhere in astrophysics, of course they still have work to do on this.

Everything in space seems to be heading towards a single point for some unknown reason.

The Great Attractor is a gravity anomaly in intergalactic space within the vicinity of the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster at the center of the Laniakea Supercluster that reveals the existence of a localized concentration of mass tens of thousands of times more massive than the Milky Way.

Think of it like a giant mass beyond any conceivable scale and worst of all we can't detect what it is.

It's on a scale beyond black holes, it would have to be billions of black holes combined worth of mass if not a larger scale

Even if you put every black hole in the universe together, it still wouldn't suck as much as the Cleveland Browns....

That quote told me nothing but "discovery happened by accident".

They are closer to finding out but stil far away, great. So much info.

Is there anything interesting in the source links or did OP mentioned everything important about this news ? Because for me its news about nothing :/

I expected some specific information to what scientists revealed.

This articles might as well all be named "Scientists inexplicable decides to accept an interview with an ignorant reporter that will claim a very minor and out of context peculiarity means "ALIENS AND THUS HALF LIFE 3 #CONFIRMED!"

Also, time travel.

Dude, just no. Nope, huhu!

It was published in Nature. Know what that means? In Nature. Sure there is more work to be done but that is science but it is quite a brekthrough.

And fascinating as the great atractor is, the Universe is still expanding ever faster so it is not enough to stop the energy in nothing from isolating further and further.
