Leave my PC on or off?

MrTacticool

Ive herd that leaving your PC on all the time saves stuff like your HDD and fans from wear and tear. But turning it off does its fair-shares of goodness to, like less dust build up and so on.

Heres some info before u help me...

My rig...

I5 4460

R9 380x

8gb ddr3

1tb hdd

120gb SSD

EVGA 500watt psu

Im a hoghschool student attending school for 8 hours + 2 hours for varsity sports,

My room is quite dusty

I play only about 2 hours a day

So if u can help with all my facts that would be awsoem! And btw i dont have the kinda money to risk parts being replaced...

Just sleep instead of turning it off. That's what I do.

380x? Can I borrow your time machine so I can get one?

I let my PC hibernate throughout the day and turn it off at night.

If you use it rarely then turn it off when not in use. If  you use it everyday for 4+ hours then keep it on.

what if i use it for 3 hours and 59 minutes

You're better off leaving it on, but let it go to sleep after a while, that's what I do with mine.

Turn it off! Consumer grade hardware are not rated for 24/7 operation. If you run it 24/7, you can damage your components. There's a reason why workstation and server grade hardware exist. Also, since you're in a dusty environment, you're constantly pumping dust into the system 24/7 for no reason.

It's like running a car 24/7, you're going to be killing the engine much quicker than necessary.

Yeah, it'll only last 20years, instead of the 25 it was supposed to....  /s

OP, leaving it on is perfectly fine, as far as components go. If you do, however, make sure that your machine is actually being used for something (such as Folding / Prime95 / Boinc, etc.), otherwise you are just wasting electricity keeping a "useless" machine one without any meaning.

Or turn it off, it's also not going to be a problem anyway.

If you only use it 2 hours a day it's really pointless to leave it running.  I leave mine on 24/7 but that's because I'm using it all day long.

yeah i meant software problems, like some programs wont start correctly and stuff, failed updates, etc...

its always good to do a restart once in a while especially if you use a ton of programs every day
