Obama math: under new Common Core, 3 x 4 = 11

AndThenThereWas1

Well i can see why our country is in debt. These are the future generations that we are teaching about how accuracy doesn't matter.

Youtube video of the explanation

Example: at the cash register ----" here is your change maam" " but its the wrong amount" "well here is how I figure It" "but it is still wrong" "well I don't know what to tell you"----------- yes this is sure to help

Edit: The problem here is that you have k-12 students who are going to be taught that accuracy doesn't matter. When they get to college or life in general they will expect to get credit for partially correct work. Its not setting the right example. Students shouldn't feel entitled to points because they know the steps. Dont get me wrong, most professors already do this in upper division classes. I have taken exams that are 6 pages long and only 1 problem and each answer affects the next. Sometimes you make small error in your calculations and that causes all the work thereafter to be incorrect. Professors look at it and they look at whether or not you know how to do it. Most of the time they will penalize less if you know how to solve it, but you used an incorrect number. The thing is i dont expect to get credit when my answer is wrong, even if i know how to get that answer. I dont want my kids to say "i should have got that right because i used the right formula". They shouldn't expect to get credit for incorrect work is the whole point. It has to do with principle, dont expect to get paid for bad work, thats just life. Isnt that what schools are supposed to do, get students ready for life?

I am a happy wuffy

I see nothing wrong here. What was your point in bringing this up again?

I don't understand the correlation between debt either. By that logic Germany and other parts of Europe are dibilitatingly retarded.

She said right in the video that they will correct the student but how they got the answer IS more important, because the biggest problem with modern education is that it's all about memorizing answers and not about knowing how to get the answer. If a kid gets an answer wrong, but they are able to explain their reasoning, you can point out the flaw in their reasoning and get them to the right answer which is a much better solution than just telling them they're wrong and that this is the right answer.

Well if I can explain why 1 + 1 = 3 then who is a teacher to tell me that I am wrong

She's still going to tell you that you are wrong but she can also now tell you why you got it wrong rather than just tell you it's wrong and you don't learn addition, you just memorize answers.

Why 3x4=12:

The 3 hard working people had 4 dollars apiece, $12 in total. The democrats who wanted something for nothing made a law that those hard working people had to give $1. There for 3x4=11; the hard working people had $11.

in return, the three hard working people where able to drive to work on roads maintained by their dollar, work in an office of a company subsidized by their dollar, and later, when someone tried to rob them, where able to prosecute that person and insure that whatever damage was done to their property was mitigated.

I think this is actually a step in the right direction. Instead of simply memorizing multiplication tables and learning how to push buttons on a calculator, you actually learn core concepts of math and numbers.

"3x4=11" obviously isn't going to be praised as the correct answer. You'll be asked how you got there and then be given instruction on where you went wrong. Teaching will become a 2-way discussion instead of a 1-way lecture where your math teacher tells you how to memorize facts.

Oh I wasn't really meaning the $1 to be tax. It was used to represent money that shouldn't have been taken.

and how exactly would the "democrat who wanted something for nothing" make a law that took that dollar, while it not being a tax?

I have found this to be a very annoying way for teachers to look at this sort of thing. In Ontario teachers seem so concerned about how you get your answer, not what it is. I am in high school and things are different from elementary now, but I have always been good at doing math in my head in rather unorthodox ways that I can't always just write out. I usually get the answer right but can't be bothered to show the work that was done quickly in my head, so therefore they deduct marks. Apparently to them it matters how I get my *correct* answer, and if i do it in a way they didn't tell me too, it's not done properly and full marks aren't awarded

Future Democrats..I mean 400 dead people equaled 30,000 democrat votes...

But we all know the person trying to rob them was the person that got the free $1...

Gotta love socialism.......

That can be annoying my 8th grade algebra teacher was like that. The math I did last year you had to either write out something long or use a calculator so they didn't mind you having the work not written down.

it's true and it's a good thing, we're teaching kids how to do multiplication again instead of just having them memorize multiplication tables. They still get the answer marked wrong, but now the teacher knows why they got it wrong and can tell them how to do it the right way instead of just having them memorize the answer which teaches them absolutely nothing they're just memorizing that this times this equals this but they don't know WHY and they can't use that to answer anything else.
